Beefing up an AT...

Screw you MT snobs! :evillol: j/k, boys! Well the time is nearing... I will have one of the fastest NA's with AT... just you watch! As planned, I will eventually build-up and stroke out my VG30DE, get some headers, test-pipes, exhaust and run some nitrous. I'm hoping on having well over 300HP (take that you TT drivers!) w/o the nitrous...

But what about the tranny? I'm pertty sure that the lil' AT could not handle all that power. And I definately want to stay AT (more bragging rights!). Aside from a high stall Torque Convertor... how else should I beef up my AT? Are there any other proven parts out there?

Talk to SGP Racing. That Kyle dude that runs 10s uses an AT. They would DEFINATELY know what you need and where to get it.

See how nice the USDM tail lights are? :D

Some of the fastest drag cars are AT... I dont care for a 5speed when it comes to street driving... Esspecially in the Nine-One-0.

Traffic is crazy here...

Anyways, we'll see George... I would love to see it, but it isn't going to be cheap... At all.

No...no way will it be easy...or cheap...but on the other hand, I don't think it'll cost a "fortune" by any means...just some words of encouragement...

I know it's not gonna be cheap... I plan on carrying this out through a couple of years or so. Or unless I get a better paying job... I'm also thinking of going back to school for welding or something. But right now I'm just working on getting my credit cards paid off (kids, credit cards are evil!) and hopefully when the new year comes around I can get this ball rolling.

LoL Shaddup! You like USDM lights so much you can have mine, Snot-Nosed TT driving, MT Punk!!! Thanks for the link, BTW. I never heard of Specialty Z before. And they are like the only ones who acknowlegde the AT powered Z... Me likey. $2500? I gotta start saving my pennies!

Well, I think I'm probably the only one with an AT around here... but has anyone here ever used the HKS ALC? Know of someone that has one? I heard pretty good stuff so far...

i just think you are too scared to do a 5 speed swap. na, j/k. at least you are being smart and not act like some other people, "i'm going to run tons of horsepower through my stock at". i have seen it.

09-02-2004, 06:19 PM
I've heard of that HKS thingy...heard it's the best money you'll ever spend for you AT, but I dunno...doesn't really apply to me.

And yes, credit cards are spawns of satan...

i have a buddy with the HKS ALC and he claims it is the best money he has spent on his 300zx TT. he swears by it. no more sloppy shifts at all. so yeah...im guessing that is a very good product.

It's only like $300... maybe I'll get it soon.

yea...that's who I heard it from....K3....you guys need to go read the "saleen vs. 350Z" thread in the 350Z forum, too...you and delerious...I just wonder if I'm wrong for being kinda baffled by some of the things that dude said...

when there is a moderator on past z car forums, he needs to make a sticky for off-topic posts. not trying to be mean or anything, but i have noticed that in about 90% of threads, everybody gets off-topic. i am tired of reading through quite a few posts just to find out that there is no point. i am glad that past z car forums is this laid back, but damn, there is way to much of it. okay, my rant is over.

Then back on topic we go.

As for beefing up a AT I can only say that it will probably only pay off if your heading to the track. But it is a great upgrade if you are going to keep then AT anyway. Much faster, smoother, firmer shifts and knowing that you won't have to back off the throttle because you are afraid of blowing some tiny little valve in the mess of crap that is an auto trans. And the taller AT gears do work to some benefit as the shorter gearing you have the less time the engine will be making max boost and thus will be at less than full capacity. With the taller gearing, you'll be spending more time with the turbos spooled full. Its not the greatest thing in the world but it does help offset the disadvantage of taller gearing as far as acceleration is concerned.

Also, if you are dead set on having a wicked fast TT then i suggest pulling the rear end out of an NA as they were just as beefy but had lower (4.083 instead of the stock TT 3.692) gearing.

Uh.... I'm keeping mine NA... unless a TT engine falls out of the sky sometime soon. The plans are to have one of the fastest NA's with AT around... Have you even been listening? That's a time out for you! But yeah... I more than likely will take her to the track every now then. But I still want her streetable...

09-04-2004, 04:37 PM
Well I was posting more with the entire forum community and any guests in mind as the only real reason you'll need to upgraded the auto trans is if you have a TT running big boost. No offense intened but the NA will probably never make enough power to require a full upgrade, barring some stupidly huge 300 shot of nitrous or something to that effect. An aftermarket torque converter is probably the most you'll ever need.

and don't forget an ALC. i actually kind of wished i had an automatic last night after my football game, my legs hurt really bad.

'Cause you got your ass whooped :D

We won our game last night 12-0... VERY intense game. My coach is crazy... And that contributed to the intesity.

" I dont care if its 4th and 25, were running the football down their throughts! DEATH ROW! DEATH ROW! "

(Backround info on coach here... He used to be a Gangsta', and he still is at heart, so he is REALLY scary at times)

Anyways, we ended up making the first down... And thats how we played... And won.

Whats your team looking like this year Freak?

(Yea, prolly off-topic... Sorry)

i don't know if you know about it yet, but here is a link to a racing automotic tranny from sgp http://store.yahoo.com/sgpracing-store/sgpraautrup.html but i don't know if you want to spend $3300 on it.

long story short, i have played soccer my whole life, never ever football, i despised football. this year the coaches came up and talked to me and said they wanted a kicker. i am just like, might as well. so friday night was my first football game in my whole life. and we got our ass handed to us, but i did my job. i made the one field goal that i kicked.

So you think I'll be okay with just a stock rebuild and TC? I'm actually looking at about 300HP (maybe more) w/o the nitrous (probably a 50 shot)... I just read that the TT's and NA's tranny are essentially the same except that the TT has a larger bell-housing for the larger TC or something. So you think I'll be okay? I gotta get a rebuild done soon anyway... my tranny kinda slips/jumps into gears... I heard the '90 AT's had major problems. :disappoin

Guys know anyone who has an AT for cheap?

ill sell u mine in a few months here. it is rebuilt with less than 5,000 miles on it. also if you are gonna pay to get yours rebuilt you might as well save the extra cash and get a brand new racing tranny because to get yours rebuilt is gonna run you a good $1500-2250.

How much for yours? Why are you swapping?

I am not real familar with Nissan ATs but I am a bit familure with Fords and Volvo trans axles and trannys the easiest way to beef up a AT is to add a few more clutch and plate pairs to each gear in the tranny. In a strong Fox boddy Mustang you should add about 2-3 clutch packs extra over stock. Along with a good TC it can handle WAY more power than a Manual tranny. Downside is the gear ratios....... I am looking at replacing my AT with one out of a 350Z (Z33) I want 5spds. And its a stronger stock tranny.

I too have been looking at building a strong 300-400WHP NA car with a AT. I've already started my paper phase. So far i have several plans like taking a VQ35DE W/AT and dropping them in the Z32. But that looks like a nightmare piping wise and on the wallet. The other plan was a good exhaust and intake. I am also looking into some head work and some cams, but not sure what companies make anything that is worth it. I am still looking at keeping the car street able. I figure 350WHP is streetable.

you make an offer on my tranny and we will work something out. it is also out of a 90 so you wont have the problem with it not lining up. if you didnt know, the 90's came with a different tranny then the rest of the years. it is a little less beefier than the the other years but a little more beefier than the z31's. also, im doing a TT 5-speed swap so i will sell everything that is in my engine bay. anyone want an extra engine???

hey k3, how many miles are on your engine? i need the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the wires leading to it.

k3smostwanted
09-06-2004, 11:59 PM
mine dont look no better than yours. trust me. the TPS sensor shouldnt be real expensive, maybe $50. i still gotta get by for a couple months so i doubt your gonna wanna wait on me.
i have a little over 93,000 miles on my engine but i just replaced just about every sensor and what not (starter and plugs) plus it has been really babied from what im guessing because the guy that owned it before me was the only owner and he was about 80 so he owned it since he was like 65. and i know i have taken care of my baby.

hey freak....courtesy parts carries it for $70. but i would check out places like autozone. they probably carry it for cheaper.

ill definitely keep in touch.....any of you guys need a radiator or ECU or anything...tell me. liquidation sale...everything must go. my radiator was just rebuilt about a month ago because of a small hole due to a screw that had came loose and rubbed a hole in it and it is only a year old anyways...engine has less the 95,000 miles on it.
