1998 Grand Am Idles High!

My 1998 Grand Am idles high. I replace break pads way to often because of this problem and it's dangerous to drive in the winter. Many times when it's idling really high I can turn the car off and then on again to fix the problem. I've had two different garages look at the car and one garage fixed a air thing or chip or something. Sorry I dont' have the name of it but would know if I heard what it was called. Is there anything that is common in Grand Ams to cause this problem? I looked through other threads but didn't find an answer. I want to give the garage some ideas of what to look for. Thanks!

more than likely, your problem is the idle air control motor ( commonly called an IAC ). These adjust air flow at idle and part throttle, and when stuck open, will cause the high idle you describe. It's a simple fix, 2 screws mount it to the throttle body, just make sure you have a scan tool reset your computer when your done, or the new part won't be recognized. (auto-zone and some Advance stores will clear your codes for free)

Just wondering if you have resolved this problem? I have the same car with the same problem.
Thanks
