Rear brake pad wear

This is the first car I've owned that I've had to change the rear pads before the fronts. 01 V6. I just had to change a friend's rear pads as well, her's 01 I4. Seems the rear pads wear out at about 40k miles. Has anyone else had this problem. Previous cars rear pads would last 2-3 fronts.
