i just got a 98 escort se 2.0 spi. it has 64000 miles well taken care of.i understand its a non interference engine. im confused as far as the timing belt is concearned.nothing in the owners manual as when to change it.info from sites like gates says ford has it as "no recommended interval for change" what does this mean? it wont ever break? gates then says on cars that manufactuers state this" no interval"that they "gates" recommend 60,000. anyone know whats what.thanks

60k is normal but ive heard of people doin it at 100k. and like u said, its a non interference engine so if it breaks then its not gonna hurt your car but you still don't wanna have it happen at an inoportune time... id say change it pretty soon...

I've been told 80k. I got mine used and it got it's first timing belt change at 180k. I'm gonna be doing it ever 50k, just to be safe, it's not like it's expensive or hard, just time consuming.

I generally wait until I'm going down the highway and the car stops running. Then I pull over and call AAA. This is probably not the prescribed way to do it, but thank God for non-interference engines! :)
