91 C. Supreme - electric problems (locks/trunk)

Hi there,

Just discovered this forum, looks good! My 1991 Cutlass Supreme has started having electrical problems.

The trunk was the first to go -- it opens by itself now. We unplugged the wire in the trunk-end for a while and it stopped, so it's not the physical latch that's the problem. (Started happening again when we plugged the wire back in.)

Now, the power locks have started acting weird, too. It's only happened a handful of times, but it will suddenly sound like someone is leaning on the power lock button (we're not) and it'll lock-lock-lock several times in a row. Sometimes the button doesn't work after that, and we have to unlock the door manually to get the button to work again.

Electrical problems sound *expensive* to fix. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Only idea that I can think of is to hire an exorcist before the car starts drive itself. Sorry, stupid joke with no real solution.

I have a 93.
I had to replace the Relay.
It is located on the A-Pillar wheel well - By the passengers right foot.
$40 at the dealer.
Mine was full of water. I do not know how that happened since I do not have a leak but there was a hole in the original one where water could get in.

The new did not have a vent hole.
Only a bit of a pain to replace. Difficult to twist and remove.
The new one had a new clip so I just broke the original one off.

The back window ledge has a reciever unit for what I believe was for keyless entry at least my cutlass does, under the deck next to the passenger side speaker, you have to pull up the carpet on the ledge. Unplug that and your problems should be resolved. Mine had the same problems you described and that solved my problems. I think it is a factory keyless entry when they go bad they cause problems, Hope this helps good luck

My car doesn't have keyless entry... or at least, when I bought the car used it was never mentioned! At any rate, I don't have a remote.

It seems to have stopped for the time being, which is extra weird. We did unplug the trunk release mechanism inside the trunk, so maybe that was shorting out the locks....

Who can say... when good cars go bad.... :)
