Smoking intrepid. Tips?

Hey there. New to this forum so excuse me if this has been posted before. The car is a '99 2.7 liter with around 105 000 km on it.
Lately I have noticed the occasional puff of blue smoke coming from the tailpipe. It's large enough to make the drivers behind me to pause and let me get out of range. Mind you this is not during hard acceleration.

I've had it for around 10 months now, changed the oil religiously every 3000k. However, the oil consumption is really high. I took her in for an oil change about 3 weeks ago and now the dipstick shows its low. (not even 800k).

I got stranded in the middle of the night a week ago when she just started to jerk and died for no apparent reason. Couldn't start her up again without the jerking and engine check light coming on. After a tow and long night, the dealer repair shop described it as a "70% chance it is a faulty fuel pump." They couldn't replicate the problem and didn't want to tackle or even diagnose the smoke issue. After a day of checking, they let me take her home no problems.

I couldn't afford to change the pump on a 70% chance considering the price, but so far no jerking problems. But the smoke. Could there be a connection? Any tips will be appreciated. I'm at a loss here.

the blue smoke and the jerking problem/fuel pump are two different things. the reason why you have blue smoke coming out of your tailpipe is because your valve guide seals that prevent oil from leaking into your exhaust valve inside your engine is leaking. Check and see how quickly your engine consumes oil. If you're going through like a quart a week, you have a bad oil consumption problem and will more than likely need a new engine. If it's less than that, then you can try an excellent additive that I recommend to my customers called Lucas Oil Treatment and Stabilizer (if it's available in your area). Now, if you were spitting out black smoke, then the fuel pump could be a factor in that your pump is pumping out too much fuel, but other than that, your fuel pump and the blue smoke from your engine are not related. Let me know what happens.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the oil consumption is around a quart a week. However, I'll try the additive and see what happens within the next week. Is it not possible to just replace the valve guide seals or is this a more expensive option than getting a new engine?

yeah, you could have the valve guide seals replaced. That's a slightly cheaper alternative to a new engine.
