Replace heater core in a/c 99 1.8T

I have a 1999 1.8t with air con and the heater core (matrix) is leaking into the passenger footwell. VW dealer wants over £600 to replace.

I am thinking of tackling this myself but I am a bit wary of the aircon. Can I replace the heater core without touching the aircon ?

An I likely to have any other probs ??

You can replace the core witout disturbing the A/C. The job is still fairly time consuming and difficult if you haven't had one apart before (lots of hidden screws & easy to preak parts). An independent shop familiar with VW's & replacing their heater cores might be cheaper than the dealer.
