Broken interior door handle--drivers side

Hi all,

The driver's side door handle just broke on our '90 Century. I was going to remove the door panel tonight and see what I could find out. The handle still has its spring-loading but whatever was connected to it seems to have let go. Let me know if you have any comments or words of advice.

Regards, Jeff

I got the broken bit out tonight. It was the door handle unit. It was easy enough to access by simply removing two screws that hold the bezel containing the door lock and window switches. The manual door lock lever was a bit of a challenge, but it basically just pops off. Then you can access the door handle mechanism. It's riveted in on one side so you have to drill that out. I didn't remove any of the door plastic, just pulled it away as much as I could and drilled at a slight angle until it freed up. I'm hoping to buy the new part tomorrow, but my guess is it might have to be ordered. What I'm not sure about is if I have to rivet the new piece in or if I can use some kind of machine screw?

More later...

I've replaced two of the door handles over several years, I used machine screws on salvage yard replacements; curious what the pricey dealer ones come with.

Indeed it was pricey! $50 to my surprise. And get this, the new part is identical to the old including all deficiencies. Bummer GM didn't feel inspired to make a rolling update on this part and beef it up. If you've had good luck with Machine screws I may just try that. The part comes with nothing. GM, where's the love?!?!?!
