New LOUD exhaust

Ok i gutted my cat a little bit ago, and it is LOUD without it. I couldnt get the clamps i got to work right so i've been running it with just the exhaust dumping out from the 2 1/2 inch diameter piping that ends about a foot before the muffler. So theres no cat, and no muffler, and the exhaust is dumping out right under the cabin where i sit lol. I get a headache after driving it for five minutes, and i've counted 8 cars/vans that will discretely roll up their windows and pretend im not even there! ! One mom was trying to drive while covering her kids ears in the car seat next to her...wtf!? HAHA! Well i found out about these things called variable valve somethings that controll your exhaust, so i can put it on before the gutted cat, or after (but deffinately before the muffler) and theres a switch i can flip or whatever after i hook it up and it will re-route the exhaust to dump from the little Y pipe valve variable things second open valve. Its hard to explain but i think you might understand. I am thinking of putting a 4 inch diameter 45 degree angle pipe on the valve that can bypass the normal exhaust system thats 45 degree angled too. So i would be running headers, the downpipe that goes into 2 1/2 diameter piping, then another pipe that bends to go straight back and i would put the valve variable thing there, then hook up the 4 inch stainless steel to that with the bend in it and it would run straight back down the middle of the undercarage and i would end it maybe a foot before the end of the dual exhaust tips i have on it now. (three tips would be gay lol) would that sound as loud as before? or would it be quiter because of the almost twice as large diameter tubing and it being longer than just from the downpipe...? I know it will be quieter in the cabin but what about outside? will it be ungodly loud like it is now just from the downpipe, or since its 4 inch piping that will be around 4-5 feet longer (give or take a foot) Would it be gruntier or more crackle or what? what kind of tip should i put on the third pipe? Lots of stuff i wanna know about but nobody is ganna read this if its this long :uhoh: Just please ANYONE respond with ANYTHING you have to say about it i need to know about what this will be like asap cuz i only have a week before skool and if my cats not back on by then.... :nono:

EDIT:Here is a pic of the niggerrigged job i did (as my uncle calls it  ) Its off now and its dumping from the left tube thats right after the downpipe. HELP MEH PLAYSS!!!

The device you are referring to is called an exhaust cutout. They have been around for about 50 years or more. You can buy them in a JC Whitney catalog. I suggest you have a new high-flow cat welded on, then just buy a complete bolt-on cat-back dual exhaust system from Summit, or, if you are poor like me, put a single Turbo muffler or Flowmaster muffler on after the old cat, and connect it to the remaining tailpipe or whatever. That will sound really good, but not offensively loud, and will perform as good or better than the cut-out. And you won't get any tickets! (At least not for the noise, lol!).

I put dual 3.5" cutouts on my truck a little while back, they sound real nice. I now have electronic cutouts but they aren't pictured.

Yeah i want to do something like that with the cutouts, but i would like to have another exhaust pipe that connects to the cutout and goes to the back of the truck a bit so it doesn't just dump the exhaust right at the headers, and i wont get headaches. Mines not a true dual so i can only do one at the downpipe dealy. How hard were those to put in, and would running a third pipe straight back (maybe a bigger diameter? mines 2 1/2 inch maybe have the third cutout pipe be a 4 inch?) and end it about a foot behind the dual tips i have right now? (so it doesnt look like i have a TRI exhaust system :grinno: ) would that sound good with the bigger diameter, or just keep the 2 1/2, or just dump it there...? Any suggestions would be great. Im planning on doing it when i weld my cat back on, and you need to cut out some piping for the Y pipe with the valve on it right? Im ganna get the $170 electronic ones on one site i saw. I can't wait i bet its ganna be really cool. Thanks for the help, and if you could respond before next wed. that would be awesome, cuz skool starts then and im planning on doing it before then :iceslolan .

"if you are poor like me, put a single Turbo muffler or Flowmaster muffler on after the old cat, and connect it to the remaining tailpipe or whatever."

So your saying when i weld my cat back on (im ganna take that leaky clamp mess off and weld it pretty soon) That if i get a flowmaster or turbo muffler and put it on after the gutted cat where my crappy magna-flo is it will sound and run better than the cutouts?

BTW my muffler has a crazy rattle in it, it started like a week after i got it so its not a chunk of the cat or anything. sounds like somethings loose in it, and it rattles off and on randomly so im ganna bring it back anyways but i need to weld the cat back on before i go and hope they dont look in it :nono: I was planning on getting a flowmaster but they have 40 and 80 series right...? Which would be best? My truck has a 305 and it runs headers to a single 2 1/2 downpipe to cat (gutted now) to whatever muffler if i understand right, then it has a Y pipe that goes into dual tips. If i put the cutout on the downpipe that would sound good right? or the cutout and put in piping on the cutouts second pipe where it dumps with the valve and all and run it straight back a bit so it doesnt dump right under the cabin, would that sound good too? Hard to explain but plz help meh here.

BTW (again :) ) I started it last night and noticed only the left tip was letting exhaust out, like the right one is clogged or something, but its not. Any help on that would be good too.

Well first of all what are you looking for, more power or just a good sound? I wouldn't spend any more money on the 305 if I were you, I'd swap in a carbed 350. It won't be as hard or as expensive as you think and it will make you much happier. Now as far as sound, I love the way mine sounds. It will sound a bit different than yours if you run the identical setup because I have a 454. My headers have 3.5" collectors, the cutouts are 3.5", and the Y pipe and single exhaust they dump into are only 3". My muffler is a flowmaster but I forget what series. Basically, if you want max sound and flow, I run my cutouts open, and if I want a quieter pleasant sound I close them. I do smell the exhaust a little with the cutouts open, but I don't have them open for very long because of how loud it is. Seriously, I keep a bag of earplugs in my glovebox. BTW, it's better to run a straight pipe than a hollowed out cat. Here is the back half of my exhaust:

How much would the 350 engine be? its a beater truck i baught for a grand with almost 250,000 miles on it so its 100% for sound haha. I remember that my manifold is an edelbrock aftermarket piece, but not what diameter in and out or anything. I need to keep the cat hollowed on there because I don't want anyone pulling me over and looking at it (which has happend when it was loud even when it wasnt gutted) I live in a pretty big city area so i have to make it look legal, but theres no emissions so i would be fine. Do they have a cut out with a 2 1/2 inch inlet and the valve outlet part a larger diameter? And what kind of flowmaster and so on would you recomend, and I would put it on the downpipe like right after the headers go into one pipe right? Plus would my half baked idea of another exhaust coming from the cut out so it doesnt dump right under the cab be a good idea?

Your setup sounds pretty mean...Man if only i could afford something as cool as that :bigthumb:
