91 Explorer Trans- HELP!

I had purchased a rebuild kit for the tranny, and had a friend install it. The Explorer does not shift properly now. From a stop, It takes off fine, then shifts to 2nd but will not shift again unless I let up on the gas, then it will shift. Also, if I slow down to turn the corner, it doesnt seem to downshift because I have minimal power after the turn is made.
