350 small block in an eclipse?

hey guys
I am wondering if it can be done or allready has been done, to fit a 350 Small block into an eclipse. Now i know that kind of seems crazy but it seems like a very realistic goal, some might say hey why not just get the turbo 4g63 you can put like 400 hp out of those. Well the simple fact would be displacement, 2.0 liters compared to 5.7 liters, a 350 is ment to put out a whole lot more HP also upgrades and parts are easy to get a hold of, Also you can pick up n/a Dsm up fpr cheep. I think it would fit just fine length and width wise I am just wondering height wise. carberators would be too tall especailly with high rise maifolds, I think it would fit if you put the tune port intake from a camaro into it.
Can you imagine a DSM the the rythmic thumping coming out of the duel exhaust of a RWD V8 eclipse, you would get the old horse power of the V-8 and the handling style and comfort of a DSM!

There are RWD eclipses, and eclipses with two motors in them also. Anything can be done, but if one of your concerns is money, I don't think it's an option unless you can do it all yourself. Imagine how long it would take just to make all the exhaust and motor mounts yourself.
For a custom motor swap project, which isn't totally unheard of, I wouldn't choose V8 and eclipse by choice. Along what you expected, you can go 400-500whp on pump gas on DSM's, over 1000hp on track cars. I just don't see the need.

The 4G63 is a good engine, but you can only get so much out of 2.0L engine with 5.7L you just have so much more torque. Also the look on peoples faces when they hear a V8 rumble out of a eclipse or talon would just be pricless. The moter mounts would be a custom job definatly but I dont think it would be as hard as you think.

the handling would be horrible because of a the weight in the front.

I would imagine you would have to have front wheel drive or you would not be able to turn very well if at all and i would be worried of the rear of the car fish tailing and sliding on tight turns maybe you could replace some of the heavy parts with custom lighter ones and i think you would need to add wait to the rear of the car. I am no expert infact i am a novice when it comes to cars mechanics but it seems that a 350 would screw up your cars balance. And i dont think the eclipses frame is able to take a 350.

We break enough drivetrain parts witht he torque of the 2 liter, I dont see a 5.7 doing much better. Plus you would have to go 2WD, so there goes traction. I'd rather stick with my 2.4 ;)

seriously a 350 in front? the weight ratio on a eclipse is somewere around 62/38 so put a 350 up front in place of a 2.0 and your looking at wat 70/30? i just dont see good enough hookup. but it would be sweet to see.. i imagine youd have to find a camaro rear end or something of that sort to handle the power and have to make some sort of custom driveshaft. not sure if a t-56 6 speed out of a 4th gen camaro would fit up in there but that would be sweet too. im sure of one thing.. it would take massive bankroll... peace

you would also have to change the whole susupension setup and probably put some sort of extra frame support underneath and a full role cage just to stabalize the body.

I can see the weight factor coming into play hear, you would defiantly need to put in a stiffer suspension, which i would do anyways probably just some sport lines that lower it a bit. As for the actual suspension set up that would remain the same you just would have no front axels and as for the rear I would change drive line but the suspension set up can still remain the same, yes some welding would be in order but come on guys everything cant be "bolt in". As for the extra frame support, I don’t really think its needed at all do you how hard it is to actually bend a frame? And the F-bodys actually had pretty light weak frames. I don’t think that it would be an issue yeah you would have the strut tower braces but I don’t think that a whole lot more would be needed. And yes that T65 6 speed tranny would be frigging amazing. Buying a smashed Camaro(which are common with camaros) and blow talon/eclipse which happens alot with timing belts in DSMs would be ideal. All the parts you would need would be there in front of you. This would cut down on the massive bank roll needed.

Anything is possible with money.
This includes ludicrious swaps for minimal gains.

Im no professional, nor do i have much knowledge at all in engine swapping, but what you say sounds like far too much hassle than it needs to be. Your looking to find the horsepower and torque an ls1 and lt1 gives out naturally aspirated, and plant it in a sport compact like an eclipse. Taking a 350ci and it's 6speed, and stuffing it into the front of a car normally housing a 122.8ci and a 5 speed tranny. Sure, getting the parts may not be hard, but the work itself is prolly harder than putting a 4g63 in a gs(as i've heard is hell in and of itself). But say you do finish this, and the car is operatable, AND your given the benefit of the doubt that the car can turn without fishtailing or any weight ration problems like everyone else has brought up, your still left with a 300 horsepower v8 in an eclipse. Weight difference between a 97 GS-T Coupe and a 97 Z-28 Coupe are 2970 to 3473 respectively, producing a 503 lb difference. The V8, being 2.85 times the size of the 4g63, makes up for a little of the weight difference. So i'd assume that your quarter-mile would be brought down from a mid-15 Stock GST to at best a low 13 with the 5.7l GST, assume all the above is correct and ideal. But, after all of this, all the money, the time, the patients, and the stress, your still likely to be slower than a slightly modified GSX. From what i hear, a few DSM have it sub 10 second quarter miles with the little 4g63. Overall, in my opinion, putting a 350 in the Eclipse is a waste, and if it's a loud rumble your looking for, put a loud exhaust on it, and your set. But then again, i may be wrong with a lot of what i said, it's my thoughts on it though.

yeah i still think its somewhat far fetched but what you gotta remeber is if he has the bankroll to somehow swap a 350 with a 6speed rwd into a eclipse he prolly has the bankroll to build that engine too.. and with a sbc its not that hard to push 500 hp naturally asparated.. not demoention the numerous diferent superchargers out there for em.. i mean those engines have been around since the 50's and except for the lt1/ls1 and vortec there all the same except the rear seals on older ones are two piece i believe.. so theres a entire slew of aftermarket to throw on one. the logistics may not be all that great but the possibilities are endless...

well I for one am for it. yes our 4g63's can handle 500 plus on stock internals, yes its lighter, yes its easier to install, and indeed it handles better with a 4 banger no matter what you do. but the way I see it is, if you could manage to shoe horn that motor or just about any V8, you could see huge gains, I have done a few of these (transplants) and with genuine sucess. not on a dsm yet, but if I had the time and money I'd probably be cramming a 429 cobra jet down a broke down gs's gullet. just for shits and giggles. I was thinking that we have all that damn space under the hatch and I know for a fact I could get a big block in that space especially with the rear seats out (a little tinkering would help) then run a transaxle like the "Hemi under glass" (old wheelie drag car) yeah I know youd be better off just building a bad ass chassis for it then start bolting on body panels to make it look like an eclipse. but wheres the fun in that. all I am saying is there are thousands of possibilities as long as you have enough time, space, and money. Speed is speed, no matter where you get it from, sacrifices will be made. whether its weight, space, gas, handling, or a big ass headache. go for it if you got the $$$ and time.

put the 350 small block in the back that would make up for the loss weight in the back....well, i dont know sounds like a good idea, but a very expensive and pointless one...

how bout a 1100cc street bike engine on each wheel? they push like 95+ each and rev to 13k hahahah

puting an engine in the back would be good for handling and all, but that would so much work it wouldnt be funny. Lets say we put a 350 inthe front, the eclipse has the room, a 350 is only a 2ft long block and will fitlong ways just fine, you have to add a timing chain and water pump & fan but there your looking at 28inches max as for that trany i dont know the specs on that, and thats the only thing that worries me because i would like to have the shifter in about the same place. It would also fit just fine lenght wise too with room for some headers i think, they might be a cutom job. but yeah Im going to start building a power plant fot it because if i end up saying screw it and it wont work i can sell the engine, 350 sell like hot cakes.

that sounds like it would be very time consuming and alot of money. I would never put that much money in to a motor for a car like an eclipse or a talon. just to muc time and moey if u aske me.

jeez, that is too much... fucking tweekers...
i had a buddy with an LS1 in a Chevy Luv pickup truck. blower popping out the top and all. thing was bad as fuck. you had to lean to the side to see straight ahead. he raced 8 second all motor Bug's.
but really, other than a joke email, or a vid on ''you gotta see this'' what is the point? i can think of many other strippers... errrr... stuff to spend all that cash on...
fuck it... do it... just post some pics so we can all know what not to do with an eclipse/talon
