I've decided to get into R/C cars, but know absolutely NOTHING about them. =Þ I think I'm going to get a Tamiya TL-01 to start out. I'm not planning on racing it at a track any time soon, or at least until I get to know a little more about the sport, so what do you guys think I'll need to know? Or will I just pick it up as I go?

you will pick up alot as you go. Something you don't want to do is to not charge or discharge your batteries for a while. That can really hurt them and will take a while before they get back to their orignal performance. Also, do not go with the cheapest stuff available. That is a mistake that me and my dad did. Spend a little extra money and get the better charger and better batteries when starting out. It will save you money when you go to get them later. The same goes with the radio. I'm not saying get the most expensive equip, but dont get the cheapest, because if you stay in the sport, you will regreat it later. For more help and tips, id suggest getting a few radio control car action magazines. they have a lot of good stuff in them. If you have anything more specific, feel free to ask.

Tell us about your interest, on or off road? electric or gas powered?

First, try to find if there is an active track or group of racers near where you live. And if there is, find out what kind of cars they drive (electric or nitro, on road or off road). That way, you can see before you buy, and maybe get enthusiastic about it, and then you buy something in the same category they are racing (usefull if you decide to race in the future, or if you decide to sell they can buy it from you).

Also do a search on Hobbie shops in your city, and visit them.

yeah first you gotta narrow your field down. Like he said on or off road, gas or electric. I just started the hobby last year and I went with off road electric truck and I love it. If there are tracks near you though Its a helluva lotta fun. Enjoy, and do go for medium range equipment when youre starting off.
