This one is for the teens...
Maybe its only me in my area, but it seems as if the cops love to follow the teenage drivers. You could be doing nothing wrong, but if your a teenager driver, they are gonna be all over you. As much as cops like to say they dont profile drivers on the road, we all know its bullshit.
Any other teens out there havin this problem?

YES and that’s going to be everywhere because cops know how much teen (especially us guys) insurance will go up.

yup. only visible thing done to my car is the muffler (connected to cat-back...not just a fart can) and i've been driving the limit and have had cops follow me for a few miles before. luckly i don't generally drive like an ass so they really don't have anything to pull me over for (i won't get into my loud exhaust ticket)

I get followed from time to time, but its mostly because the month tag on my plate is so fadded it's illegible.

That happens a lot around here, especially with American muscle cars. I've got my windows tinted pretty dark now, and you can't really tell how old I am just by driving by. So now I just have regular Camaro prejudice with the cops, instead of teenage prejudice added on.

i actualy haven't had that problem yet. Cops are prety leaniant around here.. like today i was drivin back to my house, and there's never cops in my residential area, and i was drivin 40 cuz there's realy no houses around, and 2 cops drove by and didn't do shit, so either there radars were off or i just got lucky

yeah i had that problem the other day. i was drivin my 80 camaro...bright red with a 454 4spd and dual 3 inch exhaust all the way back...4 inch cowl. im sure the cops thought it looked kinda shady or something like that. i was cruisin down the road about 45mph keepin a steady pace...the rd wasnt full of houses or all curvey...and they pulled me over just cause im a young kid. 17 yrs old and i dont drive like an asshole...im one of the people who just like to show their car and shit. i admitt i do get on it once in a while. but they pull almost everyone over that has a fast looking, sounding car. they have no lives. they should be focusing on the OLD OLD people...the people that actually crash lol

Well, just to add one thing, profiling goes far beyond just how old you are. As much as police say that they don't profile nor do they tolerate their officers doing it, it will always happen. Besides age, factors include the type of area you are in, the type of car you are driving, and if they feel suspicious about you at all. Again, its sad to say it but it will probably never end no matter what and they only thing you can do is continue to follow the law and give them no reason to give you a ticket.

Well I drive a cop magnet and they are attracted to my car that's for sure. When it's a city/town cop I drive the shortest route out of they're jurisdiction, but when it's County, I drive in circles. Over the winter a cop was following me all over Batavia (the town I work in) and when you go downtown there they're are some really steep hills (atleast for Illinois) on the east side of the river and it happened to be snowing and the snow was sticking perdy good. We got to a light and it turned yellow...I coulda made it easily if I wanted to but I stopped and when it turned green I took off nice and slow and the cop behind me was stuck spinning his tires. :)

Again more ignorance--
Its statistically proven-- teen drivers impose higher risk. I don't care how good of a driver you think you are. You have more to learn. He follows you because there is a pretty good chance you'll screw up.
Incorporating the phrase- "There are no stupid questions, just stupid people"
87_mustang_gt-- congrats on saying what type of car mom and dad bought you. But no-one can predict how many cops will follow you. It depends on how you drive
Things the cop will be looking for:
wreckless driving
speeding
expired registration tags
expired inpection (if applicable)
or a mod made completely obvious such as lack of exhaust or illegal lights (yes snake eyes ARE illegal)
failure to obey a sign
and racing
If you do notice a cop in your rear view mirror. Just take to the fact that hes there--DON'T DRIVE THROUGH YOUR REAR VIEW MIRROR. Keep notice to traffic and patterns ahead. Most of the cititations occur after the driver can't stop looking into his rear view mirror and doesn't see a sign and fails to obey it. Most teen drivers are nervous of cops and as such do this exact thing, making it easy for cops to give them a ticket---- now you know...

few things...
1. cops generally follow teens more because they know we're more likely to freak out and screw up...so they are actually profiling
2. its not just teens that are crappy drivers...we really get a bad rap on this one. i'll admit i occasionally make mistakes, but i always concentrate on the road 100%. obviously there are a lot that don't, but don't say all teen drivers suck because we're young.
3. age and driver skill are not as related as many people think. i've almost caused 2 accidents in 1.5 years of driving. not a bad average if you ask me. i've had people almost hit me 3 or more times in one day more times than i care to remember. just because some 40 year old soccer mom has been driving for 20 years more than me does not mean she is a better driver than me
4. don't assume that since we're young that we're automatically going to rice our cars. i've spent less than $100 on exterior mods, but close to $1000 on the engine.
that's all for now...hand hurts too much

I do agree for the fact that its profiling. I also agree that teens are not the only horrible drivers on the road. But again, a bigger percentage of teen's are going to get into an accident as opposed to older drivers. I do apologize for the "more ignorance part" was just worked up over a previous thread. However, 2 accidents in a year and a half of driving? Thats NOT a good record. You imagine two accidents that will set the insurnace company back at say $1500 a piece. Thats $3000 worth of damage in a year and a half. For them to compensate for that, your insurance would have to run $167 a month. And you wonder why insurance is so high. Im not saying ALL teen drivers are horrible, but rather a good percentage. I had several speeding tickets when I was a teen and one accident. Teens usually lack driving experience and are MORE IMPULSIVE, which contributes to crashes. I didn't assume you were going to rice your car, it was on a list of things cops look for. Don't acuse me of assumptions when you assume that I'm stereotyping for all teens.
Apologies 87_gt for that statement, but its all to often today that parents buy parents stuff like that. But do remember, you don't need that power for street driving. It WILL be a temptation to speed. Say that "Oh, I won't drive fast". Then whats the point of building that motor? I would like to see a trap ticket to see what you pull on the 1/4. Not a traffic citation.

wasn't two accidents, it was 2 near misses. one because i was way too tired to be driving and the other something caught my attention and looked ahead just in time. the only accident i was involved in is the one where i was rear-ended pulling into my driveway.
i've only gotten two tickets in that time, too. one was speeding late at night. kinda dumb because i was the only one on the road, but i screwed up, don't drive nearly as fast since then. the other was total BS...loud exhaust. i'm not gonna say that my car is quiet, but compared to the muscle cars that drive around my city on weekends with open headers it's quiet as hell. lots of people i know say that they woudln't slow down if they got a ticket. i have and i think most of those people are lying (i know of at least 2 people that have slowed down since their first tickets).
wasn't really assuming that you thought we were all ricing our cars...just kinda came accross that way to me by the way you typed it...my fault.

Here are my two cents.
Yes cops single out teens more, I've had cops follow me a couple of times, and I don't drive anything close to a cop magnet ('79 cadillac...Beat up...) I usually find a store parking lot or something and pull off and go inside, Cause 99% of the time I'm not doing anything wrong. If they really wanna get me for something they can pull into the store and get a donut and wait for me or something.
No Teens aren't the only bad drivers, In fact I really don't even think they're the worst drivers, I'm more afraid of someone driving an SUV, cause in my area most SUV drivers (yes I'm stereotyping, it's cause it's so damn common here) are really crappy drivers and don't pay much attention to their driving, Granted I realise it's difficult to pay attention when you're talking on your cell phone and drinking a coffee / putting on makeup.
Cops also target "Ricers" My brother got pulled over 6 times in his car, which had a missmatching aftermarket front bumper, and a kinda noisy exhaust system. Only 1 ticket, the other times Didn't really have a valid reason. After he painted the car to match he didn't get pulled over again.
Oh, and are their different rules for exhaust on motorcycles? 'Cause a friend got pulled over for "To loud an exhaust system" after two hogs when cruising through the same intersection, their exhaust were easily 20-30 dB louder.
Edit:\ Kirkland cops SUCK... Do not drive through Kirkland (WA) If you have a "Ricer" DO NOT SPEED through Kirkland (even 3 miles over!!!)
I'll stop now.
(I've never been pulled over, nor do I plan to until I get my new car)

It's not "Oh, I won't drive fast." It's more like "Dang, can't drive fast." To much traffic. I am gonna do drag racing on a strip (not a huge fan of street racing). BTW: parents do buy kids stuff like that. I talked to a kid today that he said his parents are gonna buy him a car as long as it's under $30,000. Geeeeeeeeeeeez! He must be rich.

so what have we learned...
A.)Teens ARE profiled (Because of statistics)
B.)Every age group has its idiot drivers
C.)Trends (ricers) come and go...American Muscle Lives Forever (yeah, I'm biased)
D.)Cops will tail anyone they want, Don't give them a reason to pull you over...if you do get pulled over, kick yourself in the ass for being intimidated!

they don't need a reason to pull you over. two of my friends have been pulled over and given a sobriety test when they were coming home at night. they didn't do anything wrong, the cops just either saw they were young or were bored and pulled em over.
so it's not so much intimidation as what mood the cop is in

How about a points system. Lets see for points against me, I have:
A Cobra - 1000 pts
Red - 200 pts
Loud - 400 pts
Loud Music - 200 pts
Teenager - 2000 pts
I Speed - 100 pts
I used to street race - 1000 pts
-4900 points
Not starting out too well.
I've only gotten pulled over 3 times, and gotten 2 tickets in a little under 2 years. One of those tickets is BS, and the other they had no proof of, but I still got screwed.
I have noticed that state troopers are the worst, county mounties are the middle, and city cops are the best at not giving tickets. In my area, some places the cops are better than others, and domestic gets harrased less than imports.

you're lucky...back home the city cops are terrible. you have to be doing 30+ over the limit for state troopers to say anything...my mom got pulled over for going 2 mph over before by city cops...got off with a warning obviously but that's how anal they are

I would definitely tell that cop the F**K OFF and go do something worthwhile like stopping the 1 in 10 drivers that are drunk on the road at night instead of picking on pointless sh*t to make the town/city and insurance companies money. I'd also tell him to go ahead and write the ticket, but you gotta call him a pig at some point. Only if you know everything on your car checks out also, cuz then he'd look for a frayed windshield wiper to write a ticket for.
As far as the profiling...of course, think about if you became a cop, you know what you did as a teen, and your friends...so they already know what you're gonna do from experience.

In some places swearing at a cop can be translated as assault on an officer. Not a smart thing to do.

All I know is that I can't get a ticket until i'm like 25. Right now I have an insurance quote for my 87 Stang saying $200 a month. $200 a month!!! thats with garage storage and an alarm. imagine if i got a ticket.........
Still better than my boyfriend's 97 Accord, got alarm also, but $1400(Close to $1500) for 6 months, even he didn't have a ticket before and the insurance is under his and his mother's name...

I have that beat, I pay $250 a month for my 3KGT, and another $50 for my Firebird...and I have about 5 tickets that havent gone into the system yet for some reason.
One of my friends who had a TT Supra (blew the turbos that dumbass) got a ridiculous amount of tickets, none of them went through until he moved out of state, now for his 92 Integra (formerly mine) his insurance is $600 a month...so he has no car now lol.

yea...the loud exhaust ticket i did everything "right" and the guy still gave me a ticket even after a louder muscle car drove by. and to top it all off he lied on the report...said he was parked two cars behind me and heard me from 150 feet away from the stop...meaning that 2 cars were each 75 feet long...riiiiiiight
I think he meant that he started off 2 cars behind you and stayed there and could hear you until you were 150 feet away.

Well then he's a lying bastard, if you had anyone with you that could be a witness to that, then you could easily fight it and win. Small technical stuff is the best way to get out of a ticket.
BTW 150 FT = 50 yards, you sure he wasn't a half a football field back, sometimes is decieving.

Great, another "cop hatin" thread. Im not even going to read this crap. Cops risk their lives on the line everyday to keep people safe, and its not arguable. Street racing statistics are the highest now they've ever been and deaths are going up with it. Street racers don't tend to drive minivans or economic cars. The only people in the new cars with high price tags are usually older people who dont race. I know cops and you guys have all the wrong ideas. They follow teens because teens are usually the people who mess around. Some teens are good drivers but when you get older your not going to have to worry about it. Its just one of those things. One of yall said they have no lives because they follow you around. Mainly because they, and most people with common sense, know that teens are usually going to be the ones fooling around. Do yall not have anything better to do than talk shit about cops on the internet? God knows how many people are lying about not racing or being idiots and how many tickets they have. Exlude the people who actually are good drivers.

Woah extreme woah, I dont hate cops themselves, but theres a difference between protecting and serving and quota filling...if kids are racing in the street sure give them a ticket, if ppl are drunk driving take them to jail...but when a cop gives a ticket for 5 mph over the limit, or excessive lighting b/c a person put fog lights on a car, thats called quota filling, making money for the town, which isn't right, but its the way it is. Cops are obviously needed in society, they come a runnin when pos trash calls and needs help and the trash still hates them...i dont like the system, as is w/ most ppl who get tickets that are dumb, thats all. saying cops have no lives for following around teens is off, b/c they have lives and they're making more money by following around teens and giving them dumb tickets.

I totally agree what you are saying, because I'm one of those teens that was caught 5mph over limit. Because I was having a sports car? Because I have a spoiler? Hey, those people went faster than I did when the cop stopped me. And he wouldn't even give me a damn chance for being stopped the first time, and it is just 50/45... :sly:

Also the problem is, it's not all cops that are like that...i'll get pulled over one day and the cop will tell me that 50 in a 40 isnt bad so he'll let it go, and then the next time i get pulled over 50 in a 40 is horrible!! Obviously the law is the law, but there's also majority rule to consider, most people do exceed the speed limit where it is feasible, creating flow of traffic. For example there's a road here its 5 lanes wide (two on each side, one middle), the speed limit is 35 mph (understandable because there are houses along a part of the road), but most people during the day go 45-50 MPH on it and no one gets pulled over. But if it's night time and no one is on that road and it's actually safer to go 45-50 MPH, a cop will give you a ticket for going the speed that the flow of traffic normally goes. Doesn't make much sense, other than they're arent really worried about the safety of yourself and others, as much as they are worried about giving somebody, anybody, a ticket.

don't put words in my mouth. i don't hate the cops at all. i'm just pissed that this particular one chose me to fill his quota (i know they're not officially legal, but if you honestly believe that they don't have them off the books then you need some serious help).
hell...my uncle used to be a cop. i know all the shit they have to put up with. i'd just rather see them filling quotas on douche bags in SUV's that drive like they're the only ones on the road...that's acutally dangerous. i fail to see how having a semi-loud exhaust can actually hurt anyone

LoL, I'm gonna say the following things:
ITS STATISTICALLY PROVEN, YOUNGER DRIVERS ARE INVOLVED IN MORE ACCIDENTS. Don't say because "I see worse drivers than me all the time, teen drivers don't suck"-- YOU (which is doubtful) might be an exception, but a higher ratio of teens will be involved in a traffic accident/violation than a 45+ year old man. DONT ARGUE THE FACTS.
TEENS TEND TO BE MORE IMPULSIVE!
THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS QUOTA'S! The ONLY thing that comes any where NEAR a quota is officers have a log where the officer records all the things hes been doing. Hes not forced to pull anyone over, every once in a while the department can ask for the log to do a 'performance review'. If they start to see trends where hes doing absolutely nothing for 4 hours every night, then they do an investigation. So this theory that they pull more people over at a certain time of the month is crap.
"Some of you argue "Well its still profiling"... Umm ok, lets see here, Imagine that 75% of canadians will kill someone as opposed to the 25% of chinese that will kill someone. Are you going to watch the chinese harder than the canadians or still watch them equally? WRONG, you're going to watch the canadians.
FACTS:
"TEEN FATALITY RATE UP TO 18 TIMES HIGHER THAN FOR 30-34 YEAR OLDS "
"16-year-olds are 3 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than the average of all drivers."
"Motor Vehicle Crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers."
"Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20 year olds in the United States... exceeding the second through fourth causes combined"
"In 1999, the economic cost of police-reported crashes (both fatal and nonfatal) involving drivers ages 15 to 20 was about $32 billion."
"72% of the time the person driving the automobile speeding was a teen driver."
"Teen drivers mistakenly believe that their skills driving are better than they realistically are... in other words, they're painfully out of touch how inexperienced they are."
“Adults asked to dial a handheld cell phone miss about 14% [of road events]. But teens miss a frightening 54% of road events"
All facts from the NTSB...
I can see it now "Well teens have more tickets because cops go after them more" if thats brought up, you're all ignorant...

"I see worse drivers than me all the time, teen drivers don't suck"--
i never said that. i never compared the rest of the teenage population to myself. only said that there are many drivers out there that are older than me that suck at driving. i know that most of the teen popluation sucks at driving (and many at life in general) that's why if i'm out with my friends i'm driving unless i'm drunk.
ITS STATISTICALLY PROVEN, YOUNGER DRIVERS ARE INVOLVED IN MORE ACCIDENTS.
is this accidents total or only at-fault accidents...just curious because not at fault accidents shouldn't be included in there (case in point...lady rear ending me when i'm waiting to pull into my street has nothing to do with the fact i was 16 at the time).
TEENS TEND TO BE MORE IMPULSIVE!
from all the people i've driven with, it seems to me that people either are extremely impulsive or not at all. i could be wrong, but IMHO you either can't handle yourself when something unexpected happens or you can. it's not a matter of age it's just the way you are.
THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS QUOTA'S!
believe what you want :grinno:

Are you going to watch the chinese harder than the canadians or still watch them equally? WRONG, you're going to watch the canadians.
but shouldn't we keep an eye on the chinese too? i'd rather have them stopped before they kill someone (or in this case pulled over before causing an accident) than after it's been done (citation or hospital trip for causing accident).
"In 1999, the economic cost of police-reported crashes (both fatal and nonfatal) involving drivers ages 15 to 20 was about $32 billion."
purely out of curiosity sake...did they have stats for other age groups? just curious as to how bad this is compared to everyone else
"72% of the time the person driving the automobile speeding was a teen driver."
i find this hard to believe. almost everybody speeds. could this be a statistic that shows there IS in fact profiling? there's a hell of a lot more people 21-55 than there is 16-20, so i think it would be fairly safe to assume that there are more speeders 21-55 than there are 16-20. could just be me though...
"Teen drivers mistakenly believe that their skills driving are better than they realistically are... in other words, they're painfully out of touch how inexperienced they are."
don't say this about all teen drivers. i drove like an ass for about a month and then realized i was retarded. i now drive more like an old man than an 18 year old. i know nobody wants to believe it, but there ARE decent drivers out there under the age of 20
"Adults asked to dial a handheld cell phone miss about 14% [of road events]. But teens miss a frightening 54% of road events"
and that makes it alright for adults to be talking on the cell phone?! missing 1% of road events is scarry enough in itself.
I can see it now "Well teens have more tickets because cops go after them more" if thats brought up, you're all ignorant...
now they obviously don't keep track of this, but cruising around on patrol, i would be willing to be a large sum of money that a cop is more likely to follow a teen driver waiting for them to screw up than a 35-40 year old person

Does anybody smell Bacon? Random are you a cop? is this why you're so offended? haha jk, i'm with ya on there's a lot of bad teen drivers, my only accident was from some 16 yr old flooring his 5.0 Mustang into me trying to go the wrong way down a one way street in rush hour traffic. The three groups that drive the worst are: 1) Teens who watched Fast and the Furious too many times. 2) OLD PEOPLE!!! but they drive so slow they can't hurt anyone. 3) Women on their cell phones in SUV's, omg I hate them. Well I doubt that you really know whether theres quota's or not, and if you ARE a cop I really doubt you'd tell anyone lol. But I personally believe there's a corrupt system, we're only human, and we need money!! And they found a damn good way to make money for themselves, the courts / town, and the insurance companies. I read a figure of 116,000 speeding tickets are written a day in the US, now that should be a call to increase speed limits ( 85 mph is avg. speed limit on highways in europe if I remember correctly )...cars have advanced since the 60's, so should their limitations on the road, but they've got a multi-billion dollar system going on, who's gonna stop them. (just my thoughts)

I actually am thinkin about bein a cop. Not the normal ride around cop but a sniper or member on the S.W.A.T team or Special Assigned Unit. Bust in building takin retards out who are on drugs or hostage situations. I know some of yall dont fit my earlier post and it was directed to the others if you catch my drift. Old peoples insurance should be so high they cant drive. I dont care how stupid teens are, I have seen old people do things so stupid they deserve their own tv channel. I guess we could argue about this all day but I am too busy tryin to find my next project car (240sx, donno which year). Some things Random is saying are true except saying people are ignorant. They can have their beliefs and others have no right to call them ignorant. Thats how shit gets started.

RollaRacer-- Go to hell, seriously, just die :P :)
3000GT- no, I'm not a cop, I'm a college student in SO VA.
I'm not offended, I don't have a peachy keen driving record myself.
My tickets are as follows:
16 years old 66 in a 55-- dropped:11 hours community service
17 years old 92 in a 55-- license suspended for 6 months
17 years old 80 in a 55-- license suspended for 3 months
18 years old accident -- rear ended some lady
20 years old 42 in a 30-- dropped to 'failure to obey traffic sign"
Current point standing of -2 and I have an SR 22 filed. Insurance runs about $120 a month for liability on my '85 Fiero. It would actually be cheaper on insurance for me to get a '98 BMW M3 because the fiero is considered a 2 door sports coupe.
Its just this thought that people think "Oh, well cops are just out to get me" is bull. I've had to do 4 drivers clinics and a ride along with a police officer (who explained a lot to me). People hear these rumors and think their true (QUOTA'S)<-- Which are ILLEGAL.
You are right in one perspective, tickets are a major asset to a cities economy. In Washington D.C. ALONE, those camera's that take pictures of you running the read light? In ONE year accumulated over $135 Million in revenue. All that money from people running red lights.
Insurance companies are pretty break even. All that money you're paying is just going to someone else. I know someone who rear-ended the living bejesus out of some family. Got sued for like 75k a person, and they won. So, just remember not all of that insurance premium is going just to fix the car.
Extreme-Yes people are right to have their own opinions. However, that last line was to point out that if you question why cops go for teens, you missed everything that I had posted. ( For an insert of sarcasm, I'm tempted to say "Sorry about the name calling, asshole.") :)

What a great thread! Talk about a car that cops follow, try a 2nd gen rx7, with a wing 4.5 in mufler, and the usual stereo mods. (Yes I bought it, and do all the work myself, with my job at Mcdonalds, while I go to college. )Cops do profile in my town. Cops DO have quotas illegal or not. I live in a town where one of the wyotech campuses are, and I get profiled because I fit the description of a "techer" Riced out car, and a teenager. It is horrible. Whoever said they rode with a cop, does that one cop represent them all? No, so I am sure much of the info was correct, but no true as to what really happens. My town's profiling- One cop targets men, this IS true. Another, aka supercop, follows teens techers and ricers. The others are just stupid, and cant add, as for the cop that told me I was getting 2 tickets for a total of 6 points. One was 4, the other was 3, figure that out. (Ps, went to hearing any found not guilt on the total BS ticket, the other I was breaking the law, and plead guilty) I admit I am not a good driver, for I have a driving record that is not so great. However, I drive a lot for an average teen, I think anyway. Between going to college, home, and work, I rack up many miles, and I have learned a lot. I dont think that I have become a good driver yet, and cross my fingers I will not have another incident, for insurance is a killer. right now its only 100 a month, but still, on my pay it’s a lot. I am on my parents policy, but their sedan cost more than my sports car, go figure. Any way, now that I am done with my gibberish, go read something intelligent.

i think that profiling is a real thing, its gotta be, every ethnic group claims it happens. But as a teen, i know how stupid we can all be, and i think that one of the best ways to prevent messing around is to keep other kids out of the car, if thier is no one to distract you, then theirs nothing to get distracted about, believe me, its not smart to be pulling out of the grocery store, with ur buddy in the passenger seat and to be goofin off, squeal the tires when a cop is just a block away, its not smart. as for profiling, i agree that older people should also be watched, granted they have years of experience, but doesnt having to use pillows to sit up high enought so you can see between the top of the dash and the top of the steering wheel kind of impare your visibility too?

One solution to the problem would be driving a sleeper. Even though you're a teen, driving a rusty bucket with say a nice V8, I doubt that the cops would profile us that much.
