I have been told that the reason my car is cutting off with no warning other than the rpms fall to around 300 to 400 before cutting off is something to do with the knock sensor if so does anyone know where this is located on the car at how hard is it to change? 95 Maxima GXE

I think whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about. Check your IAC valve. As for KS location, it's beneath the intake manifold, in the V of the engine. Changing it is easy if you have the right tools; if you want more info, check this forum or maxima.org

if ur car has over 40k change ur PCV. Itll keep ur rpm's steady. Right now its clogged and has a problem letting air thru which will drop the rpms and either catch or fail. This is if u can turn ur car right back on when it shuts off. Its easy to change on top of the manifold and very cheap. Wipe ur throtle body clean while ur there.

Thanks for the info. I will try to do this and see if it works. I am willing to try anything at this point that is cheap....

My car does have 140,000 miles and still running strong other than this minor very annoying problem, however it does normally take about 3 trys to crank it back up...2 to 3 mins max. I posted earlier that I have replaced the spark plugs, starter, and fuel filter. Still no luck!!! So Thanks for the info. I will try to do this and see if it works. I am willing to try anything at this point that is cheap.... And I checked on a knock sensor which is $165 and I don't mind spending this money if it works...I got the directions on how to change it and the needed tools. I should have fun with this boy, is it in a very tight space (Japanese hands would be helpful right about now!!!)Thanks again will try and see

If you need a KS, get it from www.jerryromenissan.com and use the code "MAXIMA"; should come out to $110 shipped.

Last night I changed the Knock Sensor and this am it cut off at the red light again with no warning other than rpm's and this time the check engine light did not come on. I got home and the codes that appear this time are 09 08 and 01 03... I looked them up and it says Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor? Any idea why this now and how to fix it and where it is located? I am proud of the fact that it has alot more power from the knock sensor being replaced and that it was my first time ever doing anything like this... You also stated that it could be the PCV? Will you please tell me what this is and where it is located and how to do it? I greatly appreciate all yours and everyone else's time and help.

Location of the PCV: http://web.archive.org/web/20010826053708/integra.vtec.net/geeser/megamax/images/pcv_location.jpg

Is your engine overheating? Try replacing the thermostat. I highly recommend you buy the Haynes manual for your Maxima at Autozone for $15.

Thank you for all the info. I will go get that manual, my car is not overheating though... the only thing it is doing is cutting off and when it does crank back up it blows out alot of grey smoke like it is burning gas and it smells like gas? But you can be driving or idling mostly sitting at a red light idling and it does not matter if you have the radio, lights, and air on it will cut off either way, it also has done this while in park? I really don't know but it is soooooo aggravating... I am a sub teacher and cosmetologist (not a mechanic) but I am trying to fix it myself and everyone that knows me is very impressed that I have done what I have done so far (lol). Not even close to fitting the description of a mechanic!

That picture doesn't look like my 00'. PCV is goin into the engine block, to the right of the throttle. It has a tube goin into it and faces left-right, not up down. Do u know where the throttle body is? Real easy to change with some pliers, pull out and push new one in. Letus know if it helps, its $5 most auto stores. It completely steadys idle and prob wont show up on a ecu code.
