help with tranny problems..

my 95 max se 5 spd has recently started to become hard to shift into first gear.. even stopped it is a little tough.. sometimes there is this little ssshhhh sound before it goes into gear on the first and 5th gears.. could this just be low MTF or am i about to be out a lot of money for a new tranny in the near future.
