02 impreza vs. STI what happened ???

my friend has a 2002 impreza that he recently brought to my town to see all the action that was going on. there was a black STI there and he thought that he would pase him.... if the guy was willing to waste his time racing an older, slower WRX. The owner of the STI didnt mind the idea(probably cause the night was going slow) so we fallowed him out to a isolated street and set the race up. they raced three times. the first the wrx missed second gear and his launch could have been better for an all wheel. the second his (2002 WRX) was flawless and he beat the STI my about a car. the third time he missed third, which gave the STI just enough time to catch up, then the WRX began to pull agian.
after the three runs the WRX's turbo was "GLOWING".

-this 2002 impreza has HKS's up pipe, down pipe, BOV, new clutch(stage 2 i believe), and a lighted fly wheel (12lbs i think). NO a/f controller and no boost controller. Those are all the mods!!!

how is it that he was able to pull on the STI when he missed third?

i am going to assume that the STI didnt win the overall race because the guy didnt know how to race or how to turbo launch, unless someone else has some insight .

thankyou for the replies the more the info the better thanks.

What's the WRX putting out HP wise, it's not like he's running a stock WRX by your description.

Face it, it's not a stock vs. stock race by your description, it was a modded vs' stock race.
If the guy with the STI wasn't fantastic off the launch or whatever reason, it would be possible for a modded WRX to make an even race of it.

i hear that taking a pound off your flywheel is like taking 100lbs off your car. stock flywheel is 23lbs. i believe. so that might make a bit of a difference. ... up-pipe and downpipe combo might add about 20-25 hp....and the biggest difference was probably the launch, or your friend has more done to his WRX than he's letting on.

Must have more done or the guy with the STi couldnt drive. You're takign a car that can easily do 13.5 - 13.6 at a track compared to a car that pulls off 14.8's and lower sometimes. those mods are good for about 20hp without a boost controller. At best he might be running a lower 14
