Installed FIPK... Service Engin Soon Light???

I just installed a K&N FIPK on my 2000 Silverado. It is a 4.8 with 69K on it. First off....while I was instaling it I was very careful not to touch anyting inside the MAF sensor. After my first test run down the ave. I noticed their was a loss in accelleration in lower rpm's. It felt it was draging a bit, but once it hit about 3000 rpm the truck took off. I perviousely had a regular K&N filetr in my factory air box and I had a lot more accelleration in lower rpm's. If I would of accidently touched anything in the MAF, would it caus this to happen?

Then.... this morning I got in my truck and after about a 1/2 mile of driving I noticed the "service engine soon" light came on the dash. It has been on ever since. Is this just the computer adjusting to my new cold air addition? I would like some input before I take it into the shop and piss away a bunch of cash. Please.... any input would be appreciated. Thanks

First thing you will need to do is get the code pulled to find out what is going on

i'd bet my next paycheck, you "overoiled" the filter, i've been seeing alot of bulletins from gm about aftermarket intakes, even the slightest bit too much of oil kills the MAS

first thing to check is make sure maf is not put in backwards

I installed the filter straight from the box. The package said it was already " preoiled" from the factory. And im am positive the MAF is not in backwards. I am going to swap my MAF with my dads out his 02' Silverado and see what happens.

Can anywon think of some other reasons why this is happening? Im sure this has happened to a few other people before.

If it was "overoiled" from the factory... would the oil ruin my MAF? and if so...can this be fixed, or do i have to buy a new one? If it does have to be repalced, what are the odds that K&N would claim any responsibility for causing this to happen and helping me out with some $$$? I know...I know.....not very good. but worth a shot.

If your MAF wires are coated with oil you can easily clean then\m off with a spray cleaner that is safe for electronics.

Do u mean that air in a can stuff?

once the oil kills the senson and makes the light come on, its done, k&n has their "no responsobility" part in fine print, i believe its on the boxes of some of their filters too, also a warning not to over oil. even if it was overoiled out of the box, k&n would come up with some other reason that the sensor died

No, it's not the air in a can stuff. Electronics was poor use of words on my part. It is a spray cleaner for cleaning electric motors and such. I got mine at Home Depot for around $5.00. If the sensors are finished with because of the oil as mentioned above it still wouldn't hurt to spend $5.00 to try and clean it.

Also, have you checked for any leaks in your new installation? You could possibly be sucking in air from somewhere beyond the MAF sensor.

How did the Switch with your dad's MAF go?

Before you do anything.

Pull codes!

Pick up a code reader at autozone, the only cost is the deposit you put down, and you get that back later.

You can use the same reader to clear the SES lite!

If your MAF sensor is NOT your current problem, you might make it one.

Pull codes first, and then go from there.

good luck

I dident switch MAF's with my dad yet...the engin light went out but I am still not feeling as much power as i should be. I think I will go to autozone and pull the codes and see what it is first before i do anything. One problem....I have no idea what thses "codes" refer to and where I can find out what they mean or how i get them? Can someone explain it to me please??

I checked and their dosent seem to be any leaks anywhere on the installastion. My guess is that the oil ruined part of the sensor and its not really picking any air up untill I really get it movin. Does this make sense to anyone else??

When you installed the FIPK did you by chance disconnect the battery while you installed the new intake? Not only does this prevent any stray voltage from burning out the sensors but after being disconnected for 10-15 minutes it will reset your onboard computer. The computer stores the sensor information for the last 10 crank and runs. If you did not reset the computer and installed the FIPK you would more than likely get a check engine light... the computer would sense a change in readings greater than 10% and pop the light. Since the onboard computer manages essential engine settings (timing, air flow, and fuel mixture settings) based on the average collected data it would take at least ten instances to build the new data tables. That would explain why your check engine light is now out although you haven't yet seen any appreciable performance increase. I would reset the computer (disconnect the battery) and see what you have... quick and easy way to eliminate any erroneous data and codes. If you really have a bad sensor it WILL come back.

but since the intake has been on their for slmost a week now....would reseting the computer still work? On the directions when it said to disconnect the battery I thought it was just for saftey purposes. That goes to show you....always follow directions. Hopefully this will solve my problem. The engin light has been out now for 3 days but im still not getting that much low end accelleration.

if you disconnect the battery... wont the autolock on the factory stereo engage?
