I was driving yesterday and when i switched into 5th gear my car cut off and i dont know why, i downshifted to 3rd and pushed the gas and rpms jus dropped so i rolled off the road. Can anyone give me any suggestions. i put gas in it and i tried to jump it but it didnt work. It wants to crank but jus wont turn over. Thx for the help.

You might need a new distributor.

im finding this to be a common problem wiht hondas. The just die for do reason. There are lots of things to fix it, but so far, $400 later, my accord just wont start. I'm to the point were I'm checking every wire, one at a time. I believe I've found a short betweeen the ECU and the alernator, but I cant track it down yet.
For your problem, check the fuel relay and the igniter modual located either in or around your dist. There about $100-$300 depending on which car/ distrib.

pull a plug and put the spark plug wire on the spark plug then ground it by the spark plug threas and see if it sparks. if it doesnt then take off your dist cap, first make sure the rotor screw didnt fall off, this is a common problem with 4th gens and crx's, this just happen to me a couple weeks ago and it sounded the same as what you are describing. if the rotor screw didnt fall off then have someone try and start the car while you watch the dist to make sure it spins. if it doesnt spin while you are trying to start it, then you broke your timing belt. if all these check out good then post back and we'll help you further

Thanks. I don't think i ever said what my car is: 86 Accord. The prob started for now apparent reason. Driving fine, then at a stop light, is sputtered and died.
I have a spinning rotor, but no spark. It's a new rotor, cap, wires, plugs, igniter, coil, distributor, and battery. I havn't replaced the radio condencer that's inline for the igniter yet because no one seems to have one.
It's getting fuel, but I can't seem to track the reason for having power on both sides of the fuse block for the ECU.
Do you think one of these is my problem, or is my problem something I havn't even considered yet?
I had the same problem about 3 months ago, but after I replaced the Igniter and the distributer the first time everything seemed to work, only my idle was always bouncing around after that.
I'm about to give up and get a new car, but I really like this one. PLEASE help... :banghead:

so im assuming you made sure the rotor screw is still on and tight. do you have power going to your coil ? try and switch ecus if you konw someone with the same car and see if it works
