Injectors: Do They Need Cleaned?

I have a 96 4.3 an the engine light came on. I heard Autozone will check codes for free. I do not know the codes, but there were 2 related to "rich banks" and one related to the second oxygen sensor. My catalytic convertor went bad so I hollowed it out, not hvaing the money for a new one yet. I expected that code. The other 2 were: "bank 1 too rich" and "bank 2 too rich". The code manual also said that bank 1 is cylinder #1 and bank 2 is not cylinder#2 but the cylinder across from bank 1. Is this caused by bad injectors? If so, can they be cleaned? Money is tight as I am a student already eating Ramen noodles every day.

May Be Because Of The Catatlytic Converter. Not Sure Of This, But The Oxegen Sensor Code Indicates It Could Be. These Engines Are Designed To Run On The Hot Side. If They Don`t, Rich Mixture Is The Result.spring For The Converter, And I Think The Problem Will Go Away. Good Luck.

Install a new cat.
They are cheap, 50-100 bucks and will solve this problem.

It Is An Obd2 Vehicle So There Should Be A 3rd O2 Sensor Checking The Catalytic Convertor Efficiency. It Is Located After The Cat. Since You Hollowed It Out The Ecm Most Likely Thinks Your 3rd O2 Sensor Has Failed. Your Bank 1 O2 Sensor Is Cylinders 1,3,5. Your Bank 2 O2 Sensor Is Cylinders 2,4,6. And Your 3rd O2 Sensor Is Refered To Bank 1 Sensor 2. Just To Let You Know. Everyone Above Is Correct. You Need To Replace That Hollowed Out Cat.

u can check the codes yourself, just connect the 2 wires closest to the center of the vehicle on the adl connector found under the dash then turn on the ignition(do not start) and count the flashes from your check engine light. Then u can go to about.com and look up the codes.

Not on a 1996.
That is only for OBDI which is from 1994 and older.
