I'm gonna shoot it!

If I don't get this truck running soon, I'm going to shoot it. :banghead: It's not really the trucks fault though. I'm the one that forgot the antifreeze, which caused everything to freeze, which caused everything to break. So here I am 1 1/2 yrs. later and I finally am able to buy a used engine for it. A mechanic friend of mine found the engine for me and helped me swap it out. I have an '87 Chevy S-10 (2.5 liter). I thought the engine was from an '87 S-10 (2.5 liter) also. When we installed it, the throttlebody on the used engine was different than the original, I read in the book that there were indeed two different throttlebodies used, one earlier and one later. My original was the later one. So, we just used my intake manifold and throttlebody so that all the electronics would hook up. At the time, everything appeared to match up. We get it all together and fire it up. The RPM's go through the roof. We can't figure it out. everythings hooked up and there are no vaccum leaks detectable. I tinker with it for a few more months. This is a list of all that I have done:
1). New plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
2). TPS checked-OK
3). MAP sensor checked- OK
4). IAC valve checked and adjusted- OK
5). New ECM w/old chip
6). Checked for leaks around intake & throttlebody- OK
7). New wires from TPS & Map sensor to ECM

After the rewiring job the truck wouldn't start anymore. I gave up and took it to the dealer around the corner. I know, never take it to the dealer, but I figure if anybody could diagnose a Chevy truck it would be a Chevy dealer, right? This is what they've done:
1). I had two wires crossed on the rewiring job, they uncrossed them.
2). Crossed wires blew ECM. I took it back for a replacement (last day of the warranty) They put new chip in.
3). They say injector bad, pumping too much fuel. New injector installed.
4). Finally, they say that intake manifold is not matching up and blocking some ports.

Currently, I'm waiting on them to tell me if they have come up with a fix. I'm curious, I bet you were wondering if there was a question in here somewhere, if it turns out that the engine I bought was from an earlier model would I be able to take the head off of it and replace it with one that matches up with my manifolds? Would it match up to the block? Or did I just waste a bunch of money on this whole ordeal and will end up buying another engine all together? Any and all advice, sympathy or good bonfire advice appreciated. TIA

it may have been a diffrent engine but same years because everthing past the 6 month in a year are the next years model

That's what I was thinking. I was wondering though if maybe the blocks would be the same. They are both 2.5 liters. Would I be able to take the head off the later model and put it on the earlier model block? How would I go about finding that out without buying everything and matching it up?

I HAD THE SAME THOUGHT. IS IT POSATIVLEY, A 2.5? COULD BE A 1.9. IF IT IS, IT`S GETTING WAY TO MUCH FUEL FROM THE ECM DICTATION.
NOT SURE, BUT , COULD BE. CHECK ENGINE# ON BLOCK. THAT TELLS THE REAL STORY.

Well, IT WAS Mentioned That There Was A Mismatch Between The Intake And The Head Ports. Like I Said Earlier, Check The Motor number. It Will Let The Cat Out Ofthe Bag. 2.5, Is A Bit Different Than 1.9 Litre.

Thanks! I'll check the engine number. That should be on the passenger side of the block near the firewall, right?

I found what I believe to be the engine code, but I'm not sure. I also found a sticker with a bar code on it. Could that be helpful too?

It Sounds Like You Have A Different Displacement Block. If You Can Find The Block Number The Dealer Can Tell You Exactly What It Is. You Might Have To Motivate Them To Find The Info Though Because It Is Not Easy To Come By And They Will Probably Brush You Off.

I can't find the engine code and neither can the dealer. Is there any other way to gind this info. out? Another part I can run the numbers on maybe?
I've looked where the book says to look and I can't find anythig.

I Know Of No Other Way To Determine What Engine You Have. The Id Number Is The Only Sure Way To Tell. Maybe You Can Find Out From The Vin Number On The Vehicle The Replacement Engine Came From ! ! !
