a/c - compressor or clutch bad??

I have a '97 GC Sport, I had a high pitch whine or ZZZZ noise that matched the rpm's (as they rose so did the volume and frequency) which leads me to believe it was a pully component. Anyway when it stopped after two days before I could get it checked out the AC stopped working (although it came back on once since-but never again). I am guessing that the two are tied. Would it be the compressor or the clutch?? and if so any idea how much it may cost.

Any help is greatly appreciated because I am moving to Florida and my wife will sweat death with my kids with no AC.

it sound like you probably run out of r134, if it is just go to wallmart and charge it with oil and 134 together.
