Dex Cool Vs. Green Stuff?

I have read several posts on this board about problems caused by this "red death". Is this dex-cool stuff really that bad for your engine? I have a 2000 5.3L 4x4 w/ 45K miles, should I flush it immediately and go with the green stuff?

Yes...get rid of it. I had to replace the intake manifold gasket on a 2001 Buick w/ 37K due to it. I just purchased an 04 Silverado and as soon as the warranty is up that junk is out of there.

I have a hard time believing Dex-Cool is as bad as many claim. True there are a lot of bad stories out there but one must also consider the thousands upon thousands of vehicles out there not having any problems at all. From what I have found with little research is if the cooling system is properly maintained there shouldn't be any problems. Also this coolant should be replaced sooner than the recommended 5 years. I personally am going to keep mine as is.

Getszy,
If you are going to replace yours because you think it is bad, why would you wait three years for your warrenty to expire to do so? Properly switching to conventional green coolant should not void any warrenties. If the coolant does cause problems, those problems probably won't show up until after the warrenty anyway.

on a gm vehicle it doesn't matter if you flush it out and make for absolute sure there is not any "red death" in it before you change to green. They still will not honor the warranty.

The green stuff eats through aluminum which is why they changed to DexCool.

I was told by GM that the Dex-Cool was getting contaminated from the protective coating on the internal engine parts before assembly. I had a 99' blazer that GM flused out, at their cost. 6 months later iI could see the contamination coming back. I flushed the system and replaced it with green. I have'nt had any trouble since. Aluminum was around long before Dex-Cool, so I find it hard to believe that reg. antifreeze would hurt it. From my understanding, Dex-Cool is just more environmentally freindly with lower VOC's
