Oil Problems

My bro has a 99 ford escort zx2 with a muffler (from ebay) on it and a short ram cold air intake (also from ebay) on it. The only problem is that the intake didn't have a place for his air temp. sensor so he never put it in. A few weeks ago his engin started shooting oil out and it was all over the underside of his hood. He took it to the mechanic (crappy ass mechanic) and he said it was the cam shaft and that he would have to get a brand new one because he couldn't get one off a wrecked car. Supposedly he replaced it and gave the car back to my bro and the check engine light came one (which it wasn't doing that before the mechanic) So my parents took it back and he said "maybe i will have to reorder the part" which tells me he never did it to begin with, then said that it was his intake and exhaust because it is restricting his air flow. I personally think he's full of shit and trying to find an excuse to get out of messing up my bro's car worse than it was, especially since the purpose of the muffler and intake is to increase airflow.
My question is do you think the mechanic is bullshitting us, and would the fact that the air temp. sensor wasn't plugged into the intake cause major problems? thanks.
The dumbass mechanic also said that my bro either needs to rebuild the engine, replace the engine, or get a new car. Do you think this is true? Hell the mechanic may have even been the cause for a new engine!
