couple problems...

ok first problem....this morning, got into my car, let the engine warm up like always, started driving it....got on it a few minutes later and my boost gauge was reading 25psi on a stock t25 with no boost controller...it's never done that before...it usually reads 12 - 15MAX.....also i have a question about my friends GSX...last night when he started up his car (which took a good 5min to start) there was a horrible loud knocking sound. i mean this knock was LOUD. so he drove it for a bit...after a good 20min of running it the knock was just getting worse and he noticed his temperature gauge was on H...so he stopped...popped the hood and his exhaust manifold was glowing red. i had to take a picture of it lol... take a look at it... http://www.geocities.com/grind_freak/exhaust.jpg

but does anyone know what could be wrong with my boost gauge or his car?

thanks for the help.

Steve

holy shit... i've seen glowing turbos before but never a manifold! and why the fuck did he drive it if the motor was knocking? did his car run any different? like less power, idle weird?

as for your boost gauge... check you vacuum likes that run from the stock boost controller (under the MAS) and make sure they are still hooked up! you might be getting a major boost spike or possible boost creep!

he had a major loss in power....he could barely make it up a small hill in 2nd :(

my guess is one or two of his piston rings or better yet his connecting rod bearings are gone causing the knock but yet him to still be able to run, did his dipstick pop up? if thats the case i would almost put my money on piston rings but if not then i would bet its the connecting rod bearings!

nope his dipstick was fine...never moved...the thing is...this is a new engine from JDM...he dropped it in about a month ago...ran fine. then it started leaking a little oil from the cap. then he blew his new 16g turbo so he stuck his t25 back on...took it to pittsburgh and last night is when it started acting weird...although he did beat the hell out of it when he dropped his engine it. i told him to give it a break in period...so could that possibly be it? if so you think the connecting rod bearings are shot? or piston rings...

i have heard several different ways to break in motors, drive them gentle, get on it a little, drive it like you would every day, and beat the piss out of it! i always was the get on it a little type of break in guy but now after talking with some people they have told me to break the car in hard so that the piston rings seat with the cylinder wall good! so thats how i break my motors in now!

well the knock had to have came from the block... and the loss of power tells me he either doesnt have good compression, not getting enough air, not enough fuel... which could mean a number of things when you mix them in with a knock, bad piston rings causing the piston to slap against the cylinder walls (NOT GOOD = new block... seeing he drove it for 20 mins)
the connecting rod bearings wouldnt cause that much of lost power but it would knock like no other! and the cause for loss of power could be bent valves. i guess what he needs to do is pull the oil pan and make sure the connecting rods are still tight and the pistons arent loose... drain the oil, if its glittery = hes fucked! lol

i guess thats what you get for JDM shit!

well that sucks...do you have any idea of why his engine would be running so hot?

friction endorses heat, thats another thing to add to the list of the guessing game... pistons riding along the cylinder wall will create a shit load of heat really quick! the turbo creates a lot of heat itself too... basically its just a big riddle/puzzle, lol.

his car runs but knocks - drove it and the knock got worse
major loss of power
runs really fuckin hot (picture is proof)
took 5 mins to start and wouldnt keep itself running

there are so many possibilities... best thing to do is run a compression test and pull off the oil pan! that will eliminate most of our guessing. hope for the best (bad connecting rod bearings) if its bad piston rings tell him he needs to look for a new block cause 20 mins of piston slap in the cylinder walls will rip them to shit!

sorry to bring this thread back...but i checked the vacuum lines that run from the stock boost controller and they're all hooked up properly...and yet i'm still getting a 25psi reading...anyone have any other suggestions?

thanks for the help
