Well, I have a 88 CRX and i want to know what engine mods I would have to do to beat a Audi 1.8T engine swapped into a 94 golf. My friend just got the engine swapped in and he has been talking shit about Hondas for a long time now since he bought that 'piece' volkswagon. I have a SI crx if u wanted to know, with new headers, intake, and exhaust, and obviously it isn't going to win now, so is there a way to make an SI fast enough to beat a turbo charged 200 horse VW, or do I have to swap the engine to maybe a GSR, turbo that, then have a chance....lol...just wondering....and in case u want to know why I am asking...we have a 500 dollar bet going that by next summer he will still be able to smoke me in a race..haha

arent the Golf 1.8t's 150 odd brake and 180 odd in the higher model, i know the audi's are and they use the same engines!!!! as for your car, swap in a B16 and maybe strip it and i would think you might have a chance, 94 golfs arent that light , i raced a 2.0 GTi and pissed on it ! from 0-80
civic9909
08-27-2004, 03:34 AM
ya, they are somewhere around 180 stock...for the model that he bought anyways....but they also added a new intercooler and greddy blow off valve, which really shouldn't make too much of a dif, but the guys at the shop told him it was 200 at the wheels right now....=|
Civic Jim
08-27-2004, 03:36 AM
200 at the wheels your joking??? he wouldnt get that from a IC and a BOV i dont think mate, just chuck a B16 in yours with IHE and strip it , i would think you would stand a pretty good chance , and B16's rule anyway lol
civic9909
08-27-2004, 03:42 AM
thats what i thought, and i told him over and over that it doesn't make that much of a difference unless he actually does a turbo upgrade..but u know, alot of those VW owners think that their car is the best, and even thought the 1.8T is a good motor, the cars are all too heavy and ugly to look good winning a race anyways...maybe thats why no one spends half as much money as they do on hondas on a VW....grrr....lol...now i am angry and i gotta save up some cash, everyone has the b16 engine in a crx anyways..i would probably want a gsr..that would be awesome..=D
Civic Jim
08-27-2004, 03:46 AM
go for a B18C (type R) and then piss on him if you haev the cash or just go B16 Turbo, the possibilities are endless mate, do a search and find out, or look in the classifieds for parts, engines, you though of nitrous ?

Just turbo charge the ole D16. You can piece a nice turbo setup together for under a grand.

You need a 1.8T in your Civic to even things up a little. :) But then it wouldn't even be fair for the Veedub guy.

turbo your d motor. you dont need as much hp as him because your car is lighter, but a properly built d motor can make around 220hp. even more with reinforced internals.

you sure??? that seems VERY quick for that considering they are tanks, and 180 BHP stock isnt really that much

U need alot more than turbo'ing your d-series. Gsr turbo gets my vote. You'll definitely hit really low 13s on a stock motor.

No i dont think so. Last time i checked they run high 14s to low 15s. It doesn't take much to get them into 13s though.

The 1.8t is one hell of a motor. They come stock with around 160hp, but the GIAC chip can bump it up 30hp. No joke. Its gonna take a lot to beat him man. And by the time you are fast enough to beat him now, he'll probably be faster once again. Boost a b18b...that will run him good.

Its not gonna take much to beat him. I knew of this dude that has a golf 1.8t runnin mid 13s. This is what he has done to it. FMIC, BOV, down pipe, exhaust and chipped computer. Doesn't sound like much right? But still hes running mid 13s which pretty good for that less of a mod. But with a gsr ( stock) along with a nice turbo set up ( Drag or Rev Hard ) will get you into the low 13s for sure. Car is much lighter. Later on you can build it up for more boost or less boost with more power. If you wanna get cheap then get a b16 swap and ditch the 1.6 block with a gsr block. I mean its not really neccessary to get a bigger displacement when it comes to Induction but hey if you want that extra torque ...then go for it! :)

If it were completley sealed on the bottom and half way up it could quite easily float. They don't float because they're super light, otherwise yachts would be at the bottom of the sea in no time.

I agree with the idea to go with a b16 swap. I saw a pretty cheap turbo kit for 4th gens with b16 swaps in Summit Sport Compact I think. They also had some higher comp. pistons specially designed for turbo'd B16s. If you have the cash, lil nitrous will never hurt. You can try and do all the specific things to try and squeeze every last hp in there. Port and polish, flywheel lightening, hardening motor mounts to maximize torque...
I was curious if anyone has tried the Nology spark wires with the inline capacitor? I read on a page that in theory it technically wouldn't give u any bigger bang... especially for how costly as set is... I am kind of sure that getting Nology's Silvercore spark plugs will do some good. I dont know why so many people are running iridium and platinum. Silver is the most conductive metal in the elemental table. Some guy from honda said that the little bit of difference between running any other type of metal plug than copper will only cause you to change your plugs less often.
Anyway... back to the subject at hand... You could try indexing your plugs, port and polishing the intake manifold as well, extrude honing ur head... Umm... lightweight rockers? titanium... I'm not sure what I'm talkin about now... I'm just rambling... Hope some of this gave you an idea...:screwy:

Stock there's a 150hp version in the golf, and a 180hp version in the GTI... then the Audi verions are 225-230hp.... but they're all basically the same engine, just different ECU's... so chipping the ECU's on the lower end version can get them up to the full 230hp... aint that some shit? extra horse power with almost no work.
I'd go for the GSR turbo too. Just to be safe...

Thats not always true. High compression turbo is much better than lower compression turbo. More power and less lag. The only thing is that you have to find a good tuner to make this set up safe.

I've worked for a vdub dealer and seen a few 1.8's around... they have one big disadvantage over a civic... big price tag :p
sure they've got a lot of balls but if your buddy blows it up then he's out a lot more money than you, even just a few parts for a vw/audi are stupid expensive from the factory... I bought the main powertrain and suspension subframes etc from a 1990 mazda 13b rotary for $1400 after shipping, and if I can get that to fit in my civic it will crush anything street legal without turbo, even some smaller turbos possibly... a 13b turbo would destroy a 1.8vw no matter what their setup muahahaha

my friend's rabbit is hardcore. he wanted to blow his old engine so we tried it before swapping it.....so we took a 2x4 and wedged it onto the gas pedal and had it redlining for about 20 or so mins until all of these sparks and smoke started shooting out of the exhaust. then, the car finally died and i had to be home. the next day my friend just outta curiousity tried to start up the car and it ran perfectly fine as if nothing ever happened to it. it was wack.

heh, I revved a ford escort too hard one time and broke a set of rings inside the cylinder, they got wedged between the piston and the wall and then droped down into the oilpan. After I got it bored over and oversized pistons, combined with the larger valves from when it droped a valve seat and had to have it machined to accept larger valves. I had one badass little escort.. then the tranny blew. That car was a cash eater.

this is not 1phat cx posting but his brother
the older aeb engines that came in the 97-99 passat and a4's are 150 horse they are pretty ewll equivlanet to the 180hp version that the golfs and jettas saw aside from fuel management and turbo charger size, the audi tt is the only car to ever receive the 225 hp engine...it is a completely different motor, stronger internals, different manifolds, and again a larger turbo, larger injectors, bigger ports in the head etc
there are a ton of companies than make chips for the 1.8t and pretty well no matter hat version you have you can buy a chip that garauntees you 40 whp
a friend of mine swapped an aeb motor (150 hp) into his 92 jetta, he did a custom FMIC, as well as a 3" turbo back exhaust, on the dyno he made 172 hp to the wheels, keep in mind, this is with a stock chip on a motor that originally made 150 crank hp, so your friend is right, the fmic will make a ton more power, and I can totally see that if he got a 180hp engine, with a fmic and a big exhaust, 200whp is not far fetched...he chips that and hes putting 230-240 to the wheels...with 260-280 ft lbs of tourque, depending on his motor mounts/gearbox, diff etc
when you can build a streetable honda engine, that will produce that amount of tourque, you will beat your friend...untill then...ride shotgun with him while he does fourth gear burnouts on the highway

yes of course if you run too big of a cooler, then you increase the pressure drop from one side of the cooler to the other, also if you use one of crappy design quality, that is there for "looks" rather than power you will have the same ill effects. your friends rx7 makes some very impressive numbers, what year and what engine? I absolutely love rx7's and after my 1.8t fiasco that im working on now is finished, I am thinking about buying one, tired of making old econo boxes into sports cars, and just want a sports car...although I dont know if I can give up the german design that I am so used to
