I have a '96 civic si, I know it it a sohc but I don't know if it has vtec or not. Where do you look to find your engine code???? :screwy:

Should be vtec, there is a flat plate on the engine block a little below the head and at the seam where the motor meets the tranny.

if you have an SI engine it should definitely be a VTEC. my 97 ex has a 1.6l 127hp vtec.

I have a '00 civic LX (Canadian version), the block doesn't say VTEC but it is a SOHC 1.6L. I would like to know what type it is so I can begin its "transformation". I don't know if it is an H, B, D etc... I am not even sure if I need to know to start the mods. Any suggestions??

I believe it should be a D16y7 non-vtec, but for sure it's a D-series. There should be a flat plate on the engine block right where the motor meets the transmission, that will tell you what your engine code is for sure.

Where do you live? In the US there was no 96 Si.
y7 = non vtec
afaik, the only sohc d series motors that were vtec are the z6 and the y8

ok look, you can push a honda motor to the edge and still get more, i built a d15b engine all motor and produced 240 horsepower to the wheels, iguess its because i am a master tech and hold a degree in horse power but any ways people dont give up,

Depends on your funds and what set up you want to do. For turbo i'd love to get a b20. For all motor...i'd get a gsr motor or type r. :)

Well if funds is an issue...then you can get either an LS motor or B20 which they're not expensive at all.

I hope that was a joke... if not, then I suggest you check on the validity of your "degree" because I have a feeling you might've misread the word "shit" as power.

That guy is a bullshitter until he proves it. Even if its true...i bet he spent an assload of time and money to get that much power. You can see 200whp plus with a 1.8 gsr/type r motor with less money.

how much money do you have? check http://www.japandomesticmotor.com they have a bunch of jdm engines but they are all like $2000+ and before buying one you want ask people here if it fits, if you need custom brackets, etc.

mellowboy do you have any idea what you are talking about... the easyest swap for a D series motor is a B series motor...a B16 and B18 will fit perfect with a simple motormount swap...but engine swaps arent for the inexperened...even a D series for a B series requires alot of time and money...the easyest option for him is a B18c non V-Tec with a stand alone ECU....trying to integrade a V-tec ECU or even and ECU period into the other controll units in the car is a pain in the ass and should be reserved for profestional electricians who know what they are doing....otherwise the engine will run like ass...if it was me what i would do is go down tothe junk yard, grab you a B18 for 700-1400 USD...then take it home slap it on the engine stand and do a complete overhaul... if the cylenders are scored and its an 81.5mm bore go ahead and have it bored over to 84mm...run either oversized B18 rings and pistons or B20 rings and pistons...or just upgradet the pistons and whole bottom end to a stroker kit and bump your displacement to 2195cc... basicly treat this as a crate engine build up and just keep your car stock untill your engine is ready...the B-sereis block is morethan capable of produceing 250hp Naturally Asperated...with forced induction i wouldnt put over 350HP to it.... if you want to really make power (which it doesnt seem liek you are, but just in case) DART performance makes an exact replica of the b-series block only instead of being made out of weak un heat treated cast iron they are CNC machiened out of aircraft grade aluminum....able to handle well into the 500's HP wise....then do a crate built up on it...companies such as Apexi' make aftermarket performance standalone ECU's...or you can choose to run an OEM ECU and will give you better fule economy and les revs but also much less HP or yo ucan choose to take an OEM ECU to a honda tuneing company and have htem program the ECU to be a stand alone performance ECU and yo ucna tell them about how much HP you want and what mods are going on your car and they can fine tune it for best MPG....or yo ucan take your whole vehicle to a honda tuneing company and have htem integrade the ECU ino the other car controll systems just like it was originally only with the advantage of a performance tuned ECU....i cant really give you prices because i dont know where you live or if there are any honda tuneing companies near you....

You sir, are a crackhead.
There's no - in vtec.
First you tell him that swapping motors, which is basically remove and replace with a B series, is too much for an inexperianced person, then turn around and tell him to try to attempt to completely rebuild a performance motor?
a professional electrician wouldn't know his ass from a hole in the wall when dealing with ECUs, now if you were running a ceiling fan or other household item in your car, you'd be golden.
When boring over a 81mm sleeve to 84mm, you left out a crucial part, can you think what it is?
You don't program an ECU to be a standalone, you replace it with a standalone, that's why it's called "standalone", and while Apex Integration does make a standalone, there are many others that are way better. On that note, NO, you can't just tell a tuner how much Hp you want, and what mods you have and then they "tune it fine". You have to get it on a dyno, and do multiple runs while monitoring your motor to tune it.
And while I am nitpicking, try, for the love of jesus, to at least halfway to spell check, or at least glance at your dribble before hitting the "submit reply" button?

So did you, or didn't you?
they do the rest...takes 1-2weeks depending on how complecated you make it for them...
A decent shop can tune a car in a few hours, given that it has the proper managment to do so.
and no yo ucant take it to a tuner and say give me 500 hp and then tell him only basic boltons are going on the car....
At least we agree on something.
and the part left out is the water jacket...any half assed retard who knows a push rod engien from an OHC engine knows that....
Or how about sleeving that once 81mm sleeve that is now 84mm bored out tissue paper?
...along with i did not say yo ucould just take a B18 and throw it in their with some new motor mounts and it WORKS...
With B series swaps, that is practically all you have to do given that you have the axles, tranny, shiftlinkage and ECU for the motor, all of which fit right into a Civic chassis.
i said it would fit...getting the neigne to fit is the #1 problem to overcome in any engine swap...if it cant fit then why the hell even try anyhting else....
