Why the governor on the engine?

Is there a ligitimate performance mechanical safety reason for having the 95 mph governor on the 2002 Frontier? Or is this a government consumer safety thing?

why in the hell would you want to go over 95 in a frontier? i see a frontier doing cartwheels with u as the driver.

LOL, i completely agree IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE AT 95 OR HIGHER then dont but for those of us who actually can drive and dont freak out doin 90 should be able to, or at least on the track

Dont you need to just get the ecu re-programed? Which engine do you have? I read the 4cylinder tops out at around 100.

governors are used usually to keep your speeds under the speed rated on the tires. for trucks though it's ludacris for it to be governed at 95... 105 or 110 would be fine but there have been times I need to pass on a two lane road that the speed limit is 70 and as i'm in the opposite lane trying to pass in a short distance the governor kicks in! the main thing that bugs me is how abrupt the governor is in the frontier. usually all other cars the governor is much more "svelte" at kicking in. An ECU reprogram is the only way to rid of it though!

I sure found out the hard way as well about the governor. I was passing another car when it kicked in at 90mph, thought something was wrong until!!! I gotta find a way around that!!!!

How do I get an ECU reprogram to rid of it?

Is this a rpm governor in all gears or just a top end gov.

All I know is that around 90mph, it like dies until it's slown down to aprrox 85mph then it's all fine again. The rpm and acceleration totally dies at 90mph.

getting rid of the gov is simple but does cost. you can buy something like a superchip which is a well known brand or something. have the chip installed and tell them to reprogram the gov. really its still there but they can set it at like 150 or something. im sure u can do it with the stock ecu too but shit, buy a chip it adds hp and its all around a better way to go

it depends on what truck you have. usually ou have to buy a reprogrammer yourself for the newer ones since most places wont' mess with it. (works like a chip in older cars) but those usually run anywhere from 600-1500 bucks. the best you can do is just plan passing accordingly and just live with the fact that you can do 100 out on some desolate road while traveling (like I like to do) :(

is the truck really supposed to shut down at 95mph? i tried to go 95 to see what its like but it didnt shut down i even went a little passed 100. is it supposed to be kept at that speed for a certain length of time or what?

What model do you have... I think the S/C versions may have a slightly higher governor because of their sport suspension and different tires. Mine is a SE model and is governed at 95, verified on many occasions!

The S/C version is the same as any other model.Thats what i have and it varies at times as well, but never over 100mph

heres a chip

im positive ive seen a super chip for a frontier before, but it says they dont support imports, so ill have to talk to my guy and see what he says, he specializes in superchips mainly, but knows about pratically every chip out there, give me a few days ill find out.

I put mine down in forth gear it ran 110 but found very unstable. Really if you can get the cpu reprogram it will go. That thing still had alot of pedal when doing 110 must of been the slight down grade i was on because I put it in 5th and she dived down to 80 or 90 and would not go past 95 but ran out of straight road to proceed with the 4th gear test.To see if it would go again. Not really interested to try again. :grinno:

Per another site, this governor is **NOT** necessary! It's a bunch of big brother bologna! The tires are rated for well over 100!

I know driving over 95 feels obnoxious, but when you are on a flat road from Phoenix to LA, and you hit 95, it feels like you blew an axle! The damn thing reels back like a bucking bronco! It's annoying! My 99 Frontier never did this! Now my 03 does.

I think Nissan should STOP this practice, or at least allow us to disable it, like the passenger airbag, via sticking the key in a hole on the dash!

Does anybody know what happens at 95 to make this annoying and frightening bolting action? SHAME ON NISSAN!

this is gman10:

Just reading questions and lo and behold! A governor. So that's probably what happened the other day. Driving in Texas, nothing around, doing around 85 and the engine just kind of dies till speed goes down and then it's fine. I'll be darned. Governor!!!

Thanks,

I have a 2002 XE-V6 manual transmission Frontier which governors out at about 108. I definately want to eliminate this if at all possible. I have new Bridgestone Dueler Revo Uni-T speed rated tires on my truck and have no plans on flipping it even if I could hit 130:banghead: .
Where can I go and have them reprogram my governor and/or chip?
I'd appreciate a concrete answer from anyone.
thanks

Check the site below. Jet Chips makes a new computer for almost any car. If you buy the Computer Upgrade Package, not only will it remove the govenor but will also increase engine performance as well.
