boggy acceleration! GAH!

I own an 89 C1500 and im wondering what could cause a boggy acceleration. When i gun it from a stop 3/4 of the time it will rev high not even moving, then kink out, then go REALLY slow, then the other 1/4 of the time it will not rev high and just SLLLOOOWWWLY creep up to speed. I know that my timing is off a little, but i dont think thats the whole problem. I gutted my cat a while ago and its helped with the sound and it seems to get going a little better (i think my cat was clogged, when i gutted it lots of odd shit fell out) but its still really bad. So after i fix my timing wich will be soon, what else should i do? my uncle and i did an entire engine rebuild just 6 months ago (new gaskets, plugs, all that good stuff)

Oh yeah, and it wont power brake worth crap. If i hold the brake and then gas it the revs go up like halfway i would say at most, the body will move a little, but it wont turn the tires or anything. I know something is wrong other than timing, and that it has about 240,000 miles on it. jw what it is thanks for the help.

Are you sure your tranny not slipping? The high RPM and not moving sounds like it...Power braking, huh? Thats ALWAYS real good on the drivetrain, LOL!

haha. Ive only tried it like...ten times since i baught the truck, and my uncle says the tranny should be fine, even though it has 240,000 miles on it...i dunno, how would i fix this and would it be possible by myself? plus the only tools i have are friggin a rock and a piece of wood. Poor dumb slob... haha. And what else could it be other than timing and transmission?

3/4 of the time it will rev high not even moving, then kink out, then go REALLY slow,.

That really sounds like your trans is slipping.. And power braking is a real good way to cause it! does the tranny fluid smell burnt? dark?

If its underpowered on a rebuilt engine, then ide say your problem is related to the engines tune-up.. First thing ide replace is the fuel filter, then check your plugs, wires, cap, rotor,

Get the TIMING set!

Actually it does smell a little when i drive it around and especially when i come to a stop and get out. I always just assumed it was oil burning though cuz it does that sometimes, and i think i smells like oil but i dunno. Iv'e also noticed it getting worse in the last month or two but it could be just in my head. What should i do to check the tranny and stuff? I am going to fix the timing with meh buddies timing gun and all that soon, so after i do that ill get back and see whats going on. I am almost certain its more than just timing though cuz its gotten worse since ive driven it...haha.

I talked to my uncle a while ago and made him help me try and figure out what it was, well the tranny was fine (it leaks a little but not enough to cause a problem) but eventually we found out the distributer cap and rotor deal (not brakes, for the distributer i forgot how to say it exactly) is corroted more than my dogs anus :sly: So im going to get new spark plus wires, a new rotor, new cap, then fix the timing and it should be good right? Oh and no more power brakes for me, im a good boy now. Is it possible this is the only problem or what else could it be besides what i listed and the tranny? Thanks for the suggestions, i almost got it fixed i can smell it...

If your cap and rotor were really corroded than you would be getting really poor spark.. that would definatly cause the bogging and lack of power.. But with poor spark, the engine would be flooding and it would foul your plugs, so yeah, its a good idea to change those too!

That would make total sense. When me and my uncle rebuilt the engine we put in new plugs and cleaned the cap and all that stuff and it ran great, then like 3 months later it started to act like this, and its getting worse. Been about 7 months now and gutting the cat helped the boggyness quite a bit (it was clogged) but its still reasonably bad. Ill look for some replacements that arent made out of NASA plastic or some crazy $56 cap like at Checker...ugh...Thanks fer the help.

Well i got my paycheck and im looking to get a new cap, rotor and wires. Cant go to checker cuz its $56 just for a stock cap :screwy: so im keeping my eye out. Also i just noticed my gears shifting a little goofy. Maybe im getting picky but it seems like it shifts quite a bit later than it should, especially in residential and stuff like that. Does Wal Mart have caps and rotors...? I can maybe afford those ones haha.
