Hi, I'm new to this forum and found it while browsing for help with my '98 truck's problem. It (the forum) looks very good.
The dome lights and floor level courtesy lights did not time out yesterday, remaining on for ever. There were no intermittent warnings beforehand.
I've followed the wiring in my Haynes manual and I figure it's a failed "Interior Lamp Control Module". Where is it located???? It's not in the sub assembly down in the e-brake pedal area that holds the directionals module, the noise maker and a relay. I can't see anything under the hood that might be it.
Of course it could be the courtesy lamp switch failed "on" without touching it. It couldn't be a failed door jamb switch unless the dome override switch failed in the "on" or out position as well.
BTW, I don't have remote door locks
In the meantime I've pulled fuse #3 to save draining the battery.
Thanks in advance for any help.

My 96 had exactly the same problem! I thought it was a freak occurance. However, I had factory keyless entry. My problem ended up being a semi-stuck relay in my remote keyless entry module. This module also had a job controling the dome lamp. My dome overide button on my headlight switch connects to the relay in the module. My module was located above the GAS pedal, underneath a metal bracket that also mounts the Air Bag module to it. You can barely see the Keyless entry module because it's under this bracket. You can identify the SRS Air Bag control module by yellow connectors. To isolate the problem, I turned the ignition key to on, engine off. I removed my door buzzer so I could hear my relay clicking. And then I laid down underneath the dash and with my left hand, turned the dome overide button on and off. I could hear the relay, and finally with my fingers I was able to pinpoint the box that was clicking. I hope this helps isolate your problem. I ended up removing the factory keyless entry box and substituted it's functions for a AudioVox/Prestige remote start alarm that I had gotten. No more sticking dome light, no more drained battery. -Chris

Chris - Many thanks for your response. I have found a module up above the gas pedal clipped to a bracket. I have been able to get it unclipped, but haven't yet separated the connection. It has six wires going into it, whereas Haynes' schematic shows only five. 5 wires are the right color but I have an extra blue wire. The case of the module has a diagram showing two relays sort of cross connected. I only had a few minutes to work on it today and ran out of time, but I wanted to say thanks. - Peter

That cross-connected relay is for your power door locks! You need to go up farther than that! That piece of metal that the relay is connected to has three fasteners. A 7mm screw and two 15 mm bolts. If you remove that metal panel, underneath it is the module I am talking about. Out of memory, you should have a orange, black, blue, grey, and violet wire coming out of that relay, that is your door lock relay! It doesn't have anything to do with your dome light. -Chris
