69 Mustang turn signal switch

I need to replace the turn signal switch on my '69 Mustang. Any tips or hints on how to do this? The Ford manual mentions a tool to release the tips of the wires from the connection at the base of the steering column. Do I really need one or is there another solution? Thank you.
