It's not that you connect a laptop to the car, it's if you can use a laptop with the logging program you use. For example DSMlink is practically laptop only, but pocketlogger is mostly used on palms. I don't doubt you can use a laptop on a lot of loggers instead of a palm, but if you want the best, you already have suggestions here for DSMlink.

Go to www.autotap.com. Connect to your '95 or newer DSM through the OBDII port. Can't change anything, but you can monitor all the sensors that the manufacturer made available.

I went to the FAQ.
Q. Do you support European and Asian cars?
A. The AutoTap OBD II Diagnostic Scanner is designed for use on 1996 and newer OBD II cars. This includes all domestic manufactured vehicles and includes foreign vehicles manufactured for sale in the US. AutoTap may work with foreign vehicles manufactured for sale outside of the US, but we are unable to provide technical support for these applications.
A quick way to tell whether a vehicle is an AutoTap scan tool candidate is to examine the connector on or under the dash. If it is round, or any other shape than the rectangular 16 pin OBD II connector, an AutoTap scanner will not work on that vehicle.

I have used the autotap hardware and software on my 95 AWD talon and it works fine. AWD TSi and GSX are the same car, for all practical purposes. The new hardware supports all types, including CAN. We buy their hardware and use it with our VC3000 performance computer. www.vericomcomputers.com
Autotap will work on any car '96 or newer driving on U.S. roads. Some cars made for other countries can also use it but they may have limited parameters supported. I mainly use it to check DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) and clear them. The basic package gives you the 27 EPA mandated parameters and for I think $150 more you get all the parameters, up to 400 on some vehicles. My 95 AWD Talon only supports the 27 though. '96 I believe is the same. Don't know about newer DSM's.

In general automotive applications, something that uses OBD2 to monitor the computer, especially DTC's.. is called a Scan Tool. It's what autozone or the dealership uses to find out if you have a CEL on. For modifying purposes, a logger is something that monitors only the information that tuners really want, AND has the bonus of showing any DTC's. If you wanted to get a scan tool, you might as well just get a palm logger.
