Water Pump Woes

So i recently bought a replacement water pump for my Spyder because my current one is on the verge of death. I paid like 50 bucks for it, which isn't a big deal. Anyways, i called this morning to find out how long it would take to install and how much, and my dude says he has to check his book on the installation time. I call him back, and he tells me the good news. A five hour plus job, and it looks like you have to actually pull the motor to get to the water pump. A 300 dollar job for a 50 dollar water pump. My question to anybody whos replaced there water pump is, "Is this true?". From the looks of it, i can tell it would be a bitch to replace, and i've gotten the same response from others. But do you really have to pull the engine to get to a water pump? BTW, my car is also the 2.4l Spyder, so i am not sure if it's the same for 2.0nt or 2.0t vehicles.

I don't know about the 2.4, but if it anything like the GS-T you might as well do the timing belt, balancer belt, hydrolic tensioner when you are in there. I actually had my water pump replaced (there was nothing wrong with it) when I had the timing belt done because of the labor cost to get to the damn thing. So that sounds about right.

You don't need to pull the motor. Just release the motor mount and jack the motor up and down to get to different things.

The spyder in my sig is a 2.4. I changed the water pump a while ago, cost me $300. So yeah, the price range sounds about right.

ah damn... I already changed the timing belt 20,000 miles ago, so i really don't need that. I'll check the hydrolic tensioner and the balancer belt though. I'm just going to assume the 4g64 is set up almost the same as the 4g63 and get those parts checked.

If you are going to pay for the labor to do the water pump, you might as well buy a new timing belt. Better to spend an extra $60 now than $400 later. Just my :2cents:
