wheel problems

I have a '99 GT. When I am starting from a complete stop, the wheels sometime feel like they are not "catching" when I push the accelerator. There is this awful clunking noise, and the whole car jerks. When I watch it happen, the wheels seem like they turn a bit, then get "stuck" and don't turn, and then turns a bit more, then gets stuck again. This all takes place within one or two seconds. It doesn't hapen at any other time while I'm driving. Only when I am coming from reverse, or when I am completely stoped at an intersection. It happens mostly when I step on the gas fast. Anyone have this problem, or know what's going on? I just had it ito the shop, and they said that the trasmission seems fine.

Sounds like a bad front hub bearing to me. I had a 91 Cavalier with the same problem, you could actually watch the wheel jerk as the bearing bound and unbound, then it would be fine until the next time you reversed then went forward. The odd thing was, it never growled or made noise while driving, just when you changed directions, or came to a complete stop and accelerated briskly.
