hey guys, i have an auto trany and most of the time i like to play around with. when driving i will move from"2" to D3 and D4. anyways my question is will this hurt my tranny? or anything else. its not like im redlining it.just some simple up and down shifting to get max power. thanks guys

Dude i did it all the time in the past and i never had any problems in fact thats what those gears are for. Going down the hill put it in a lower gear to slow down, save those brakes. And up hill to put it that gear that will let me get that much more speed to get up the hill.

yup, and when racing, change manually too, keep in the same gear until redline and falls back into torque peak for next gear, very good for acceleration... i find the manual guys who dont know how to snapchange are caught off guard by our instant gear changes... and they never catch up again...
also, make sure ur kickdown cable is pulled nice and tight... like u would ur accelerator cable...
i put a thick washer between the kickdown cable tension nuts and the lever on the gearbox, found that this made the box a lot peppier... immediately felt more power on the wheels at pull away...

ive found the fastest way to accelerate in an auto box is to start in 3, wait for the tranny to shift into 2nd, then you downshift into two, then take it to redline and upshift to 3, redline, shift to 4, etc.

It's not really going to hurt it, not as long as you don't do it everytime you drive the thing. I personally wouldn't do it, but then again I'm really precautious. That's something I've got to get over! LOL

i dont see how doing it every time i drive it, and every so often would make a difference. you either hurt the tranny or u dont. so i guess will it wear out the tranny then?

I'v heard tranny shops say its not good for it, cant tell you why though.

yes it messes up ur trany ~ power shifting i blew one up doing that.

no i dont usually accelerate hard when i do it, so i dont think its power shifting. how does it mess it up? i thought thats what its meant for.

Why are you trying to run your tranny higher than its meant to go? Just leave it in gear and stop tyring to understand why manuals are faster.
Its hard as fuck on trannys, take it from me who has ruined one because I would occasionaly run mine up past the stock DX redline when I had my ZC in because it made more power up there. But it was a dumb idea and unless I was passing it didn't make any difference. If I was racing I could never put it in first, and by the time I reached second the guy with 5 gears was already mid-way through 3rd so it didn't really matter to redline 2nd.

Well lets get something straight because obviously you have the wrong idea. First off i never redline it, i use it most of the time going up or down a hill. secondly i dont care if manuals are faster because iam 100% against street racing, and my DPFI D15b2 frankly isnt exactly for racing. i never said in this post ever that i try to run my tranny higher then its meant to go. get an idea what this thread is about before typing please, or dont say anything at all. thanks bro

he's probably responding to some of what other ppl have posted on this thread as well....
anyway, i do it sometimes on my auto tranny but it really doesn't make too much of a difference on mine - maybe a little better response if you're redlining, but that's why the new acuras have the thing where it's meant to be driven as an auto and a stick (you get to pick the mode, not exactly sure how that works lol). Our auto trannys aren't really made for racing lol (i'm not even sure the box could take too much extra hp to the wheels before going out).
But, if you aren't racing (obviously), you shouldn't have anything to worry about. There are plenty of other things that would go wrong before the tranny does. Honda made a very reliable auto transmission, and if they didn't want you switching between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th on an auto tranny, they would of only put D4 on there and not the others.

yea man dont worry about it... i do it all the time to get up hills.... i knew a guy that towed a jetski behind a hatch and he had to put it in second to get up any hills at all... poor little d15b2 couldnt really cut it.... i need to start a thread about this... i need to tow a u-haul about 300 miles......

I do have the wrong idea? I think maybe you do. Did I reply to you specifically? Why do you assume I'm talking to you!?
In your first post you say:
its not like im redlining it.just some simple up and down shifting to get max power. thanks guys
I still don't get it. I dunno about your auto tranny, but any that I've ever driven has downshifted for you when nessicary to gain desired speed?! And redline IS maximum power on Civic motors, so I don't know what you're downshifting to?
get an idea what this thread is about before typing please, or dont say anything at all. thanks bro
I have a very good idea what this thread is about. And I reply to anything I see fit.
thanks for comming out bro.

My DX tranny stood about 6 months with my ZC, it was so fucked I couldn't give it away when I opted for a 5 speed an more powah.

actually i think you are wrong on that one, just a bit BRO. when going down a hill has ur tranny ever down shifted for you? i dont think so, actually as u gain more speed it actually up shifts, retard. the reason i do it is to save my brakes. thanks and come again
And redline IS maximum power on Civic motors, so I don't know what you're downshifting to?
actually instead on heaving on my throttle in d4 i put in d3 most of the time when commuting to work, and i can achieve more power without redlining it, im sorry thats what i meant to say. thank you

And also quiting whining bout how u f*cked ur tranny up with ur zc. obviously you had no clue. no wonder you fucked it up, with that mcuh more hp. i can beleive why it doesnt work anymore. but try to understand that your situation is alot different then mine. im still using my stock motor, and also i dont race it/ redline it. thanks BRO

The DX does alright, i beat a 97? cavalier the other night and a 95? twin cam saturn with an intake and fart can a week later. Oh and all i have is a cold air intake so the d15b2 isnt as bad as people say it is.

Accually yeah it does, or other wise you'd just be a dead stick falling down a hill.
There is a reason they call it an automatic... you know as dumb ass driver shifting not required. The lower gears on an automatic transmission are for verious senarios, not for performance. Such would be towing, heavyer loads, improved traction on wet/icy roads, fail safe incase your tranny shits itself so maby you can atleast put it some gear to get it off the road. They never intended for you to shift it yourself on the regular basis. If they did they would have included a clutch.

no the auto tranny doesnt downshift...it actually just stays in the same gear. i should know because i drive my sister and my mom's car all the time and play around with the gears(91 accord and 93 nissan quest). i think the main reason for the lower gears is for incase the brakes fail or saving the brakes for mountain driving(bad to ride the brakes). they teach you that in driver's education.

Whining? I'm just stating the facts man, I'm fucking happy the autotragic is gone I don't miss it one bit. I'm just saying for all the boy racers in this thread, that Honda autos don't take much of a joke. If you want to control what gear you're in, get a manual.
And dude-bro-pal-buddy GET IT THROUGH YOUR FUCKING HEAD THAT I WASN'T REPLYING TO YOU WHEN TALKING ABOUT RACING YOUR SLUSHBOXES. Do you understand?
Downshift it all you want, if your tranny poops, I told you so.

hhhmmm... when i took the D15B3 out of my car and transplanted a ZC in her, i replaced the original box with one from an auto Del Sol... it was mated to a 1500 sohc vtec motor... so i know it could withstand 130hp at least.
since then ive added headers, intake and exhaust, so i do think the autoboxes are not all created equal... she runs alot faster than with my old box... and takes the strain without hassle. I race frequently... and ive had it in for two years now...
