well, it depends on what aspects of automotive mechanics you get into. if you are just going to get ASE cert. and nothing else, then yes, it could be somewhat dead-end. however, as long as there are cars, there will be a need for a trained professional to work on them (as im sure 89IROC would agree). if you want to get into more specialized fields, like performance engine building or autobody, stuff like that, i think the opportunities are more abundant. it all depends on what you want and like to do, but i dont think that anything is dead-end...

im thinking of going into the mechanic field as well, and yes there will always be cars, and cars will always break down, so there is always a need for mechanics.

how man psi does that one have? i was thinking about buying a 03 GT
and throwing a roush body kit on it and a supercharger. i found a 03 GT for $15,000 with 6500 miles. do you think it would be worth it?

thats a good price but can a GT be turned into a roush stang. i want side pipe exhaust, the works.
or should i not waist my time and money. i have a 94 supercharged z28 that will leave a zo6 vette setting in its tracks. its had a lt4 conversion as well and a hot cam put into it. i need me some headers for it.

Engine performance building and stuff like that is a dead market. I am in Caterpillars think big program. That specializes in CAT engines, and everything that makes a cat machine run. GM has their own program like that called GM ASOP where you get. Ford has their outreach program. Don't get into something like performance engine building or stuff like that. Why do you think Wyotech people don't get jobs? everyone goes there to learn engine perforamce crap thinking that they are going to be on some pit crew right after they get out of calss. Find a program that is backed up by a manufacture.

I went to UTI. I wouldnt suggest it to my worst enemy. Waste of time and lotsa money. I guess its alright for someone who knows nothing. But I grew up working on cars, so i didnt hardly learn shit, and what I did learn was not worth the $25k it took me to go there.

blueturtle: A kid I know went to school for NASCAR tech but ended up dropping out because he found out that the few students who are selected to work with the teams almost always know someone.
Ridge: Start out with the required courses in general engineering, then once you get into it farther, you can decide what field you want to get into, (electrical, computer, mechanical). Chevyracincamaro is right, there are alot of opportunities for electrical engineers. Just don't put too much pressure on yourself to figure out what you want to be right now. Most college students change their majors at least once during their schooling. I started out in chemical engineering and ended up with a degree in Computer Aided Design. Now I'm going back for my B.S. in mechanical engineering. Take your time.
