Does anybody have any ideas how to get rid of the mildew odour left by the air conditioner? Even with the A/C not running the vents are permiated with the smell.

You need to kill, destroy the bacteria that grow in the AC so you no longer get that smell. Go to the auto shop and they have spray for that purpose.

Here is the best way to take care of bacteria/Mold/mildew/and fungus problem that is making your AC stinky.
1) get a large can of Lysol (choose a fragrance you like).
2) Crank your MV, and turn your fan on high. Leave AC off.
3) Pop your hood. You will notice right below the bottom portion of your windshield, there will be a screened opening. Wet your finger and you should feel air flow. This is the air intake for your cabin heating/cooling system.
4) Spray the Lysol directly into that screened opening. Spray about half the can in that opening. (your van will sure smell purty now...)
5) turn your a/c on, keep your fan speed on high.
6) Spray the other half of the can in the screened opening.
7) turn off the Van, close your hood, and you should be done.
This should kill the different odor causing organisms living in your van's heating/cooling system.
be carefull of moving parts in the van's engine compartment when you do this.
Also, using the recirculating feature minimally will decrease the chance of the stink coming back.
Good luck!
