locked steering column

I have a 2001 Buick Regal LS. The other night, my car battery was worn down. After my husband jump started the battery, I drove for about 20 minutes and everything was fine. After we returned home, I turned the car off, and then tried to start again. My steering column has locked up, and will not move more than a 1/4 of an inch in either direction. I have tried letting the key (with chip) stay in the ignition for 20 minutes to possibly "re-set" the system. The tires are straight. The vehicle has gas. The battery is charged. I am at my wit's end, and I am having to ride to work with my husband, who cannot be on time to save his life. Please help me save my marriage. It is important to note, I have not used my keyless remote in over a year, as it has been lost for this amount of time. HELP ME PLEASE!
