on a built NA H22A - with 11:1 compression - how much power can you squeeze out of the motor with port/polished head - 1mm oversized valves, 10k+ redline, forged pistons, 93 octane gas.... port / polish intake manifold / throttle body, (is it possible to get a 10k+ redline?) I just can't understand how NA would still net horsepower gains.... i guess its all in tuning huh.... well with a fully built engine with 10k+ redline / 93 octane gas, 11:1 compression, would i be able to get any decent amounts of power out of that? I'm debating FI vs NA.... i can't ever get any real answers - i just get opinions. I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for facts. :banghead:

There's no straight answer about how much exact hp you'll get out of that setup. But you should upgrade the cams, retainers, valves springs, and get cam gears along with those other things to get more power; because just raising the compression and air flow isn't going to give you a ton more without something else to help it along (cams). I doubt you'll be able to rev that high or even make power that high; but the only way to know for sure is to dyno tune it, and it also depends on which cams you choose. With all those mods you could get 20-30+ more hp but again the only way to know for sure how much more is the dyno.

well that's what i meant by a "built" motor. didn't think i had to specify cams, retainers, springs, valves..... and only 20-30 more HP? what would i have to do to get the torque at a higher RPM?

on an H22 with all those mods, properly tuned youd be looking at at least 250hp and prolly 200lb/ft

yeah but my question is... where in the RPM band would that 200 lb/ft of torque be? because thats what would decide the final output in horsepower. with a fully built head and bottom end would it be possible to get an H22's redline up to 10 grand?

Turbo the damn thing. You're gonna waste alot of money adding 40 HP and staying all-motor. And personally, I think the H22 is good enough to be bosted, closed deck. Even if its high-medium compression, you can still boost low and get great results.

i'm still gonna rebuild... so i should still just "turbo the damn thing" and do it with a built block so i can see some real numbers... if i turbo and wanna run like 10-15 lbs of boost do i still gotta build the head up any besides the cams? i know i gotta build the block... but what about the head?

a few things here, first of all on 11:1 compression you wont make power to 10k. youd need to go higher than that on the compression and youd need very expensive headwork along with cams that make power up there. more than likely a custom grind. one more thing people dont go just by numbers. a 250hp NA h22 is completely different from a 250hp turbo h22. the NA would win hands down everytime. i dont exactly no how to explain it other than by the power curve but NA horsepower is always better than F/I horspower. also by turboing the motor youd be adding a much higher price tag to the setup for all the turbo parts, just to let you know.

Doesn't matter if you go N/A or forced induction, you're going to need to sleeve the block to put new pistons in it. Sleeve it, get some stock bore 8.5:1 pistons, and boost the fuck out of it.

that is a more realistic redline and yes on 11:1 you could maintain driveability and run on pump gas but it would need good tuning. so make sure someone can do that for you without blowing the motor.

Don't go all-motor it's a waste of money, if a turbo gets you more Hp for the same amount of money, why not go turbo? And if anyone tells you turbos are not reliable, they're full of shit.

i dont think anyone said they are not reliable. i also dont think NA is not worth it. but then again its all about what you plan on doing with it. and i highly doubt they would be the same cost.

think about it....
NA setup includes (very very simplified):
building motor
engine management
bolt ons

Turbo setup includes (also very very simplified):
building motor
engine management
minor bolt ons
AND a full working turbo kit

the price would almost definitely go up with turbo

Ok if you wanna go turbo...u can keep the head STOCK. Just build the bottom end. Theres so many routes you can take to make this happen. I'm an all motor guy and NO ITS NOT WASTE OF MONEY. If you want to rev up to 11k u need to build the bottom end, work on the crankshaft, balance and blue printed on that specific specs. The head is only to be build to handle high rpm but doesn't mean u can rev that high unless the bottom is built right. You can go on pump gas even if you bump the compression 12:0 but needs to be TUNED right and its kinda hard. I'd say stick with 11:5 and you'll be fine. No one here can give you exact numbers on what hp or torque cause it depends on the tuning and who tunes your car. Go to www.importbuilders.com. These guys know what they're doin. :)
