98 Tiburon Transmission Problem

Hello All,

I'm new to this board and have a question concerning the way my car is shifting. First off, a little background about my car. I bought it in 99 w/ 33k miles on it. It currently holds 110k miles. It seems like I've had more mechanical problems with this car than with any other. I've done a lot of commuting w/ this vehicle (school and work = 120 miles/day round trip).

The car is an automatic and it is "flaring" up when I go over 30mph...the RPMS go crazy. It sounds similar to the way you rub up your engine when your car is in neutral and your pressing on the gas. The car WILL NOT shift from 3rd to 4th gears. I'm also expericing difficulties w/ the car in reverse. It is very tempermental and I don't trust it. I drive on the freeway to get to work everyday (60 miles round trip) and have not been able to take myself to work in over a week. I really need to get this figured out and a price range on how much it is going to cost me.

I took it to a place that has worked on my vehicle previously and they say it could be a couple different things. Not sure what b/c my gf took the car in why I was at work. All I know is they qouted 1350 to 2500 to fix it. But they suggested they would have to take the tranny out to be able to tell what it is.

I have a friend who is a lead mechanic at a GM dealership, he hasn't looked at the car yet, but feels it may be something wrong electrically??? Not sure, but I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worse.

Hope someone can shed some light on the situation and give me some advice on how to handle this in the cheapest way possible.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

L.C.

if i were you, i would swap in a manual transmission.

1. its VERY easy to do. all the mounts are the same. i can find a DIY for you if you decide you want to.

2. a manual transmission can be had for much cheaper. you can find one on ebay for under 200 bucks..

3. hyundai's manual trannies are much stronger than their automatic counterparts. you will have a lot less trouble with the manual tranny.

4. manual trannies are funner.

if you still want to go the auto route, i would suggest having autozone(will do for free) or some other shop hooking the car up to a obd code reader and see if any codes are displayed. if so, post back up here and i can give you more specific details.

also, have a look at this...
