Funky fuel gauge

A number of years ago I hit a curb with my rear right tire and the fuel guage quit working. It shows empty all the time, yet will move when I run out of fuel. For now I have been living with the trip meter as my fuel guage, although I need to always fill the tank when getting gas.

I suspect my float is either stuck or somehow got broken when I hit the curb. Any ideas or quick fixes aside from dropping the tank? I have already ruled out a fuse problem and have hit curbs on purpose multiple times trying to get it working again. It is a '94 Ranger Splash.

Check all the connections first - easier than dropping the tank. And what did you mean that it only moves when you run out of fuel? what's it do? You probably messed up the float and sensor as they are kinda fragile. Oh and running into more curbs will surly cause more problems, not just with your tank - let me know how things go!

If I run out of fuel the guage will jump up to about 1/4 of a tank with the ignition turned off. Turn the ignition on or fill the tank up and it will drop back to show empty. Pretty weird. BTW, I no longer hit the curbs on purpose. I did that a while back out of frustation.

sounds like you have to drop the tank and replace the assembly.
