I couldnt put it off any longer and have broken my goldern rule of doing only one kit at a time.

This kit is awesome. Started it today and the detail is the best i have seen on a Tamiya kit with no engine.
Its going to be a project i cant wait to get my teeth into.
Have cut all the bits from the "tress" and sanded the odd bit here and there. Most bits are ready for painting.
The body will take up most of the time as it will have to be primmed first, painted white then masked off to paint the yellow. So that will be at least 4-6 weeks on the body alone. Then will be the detail painting of the body followed by the decals...all 68 of them

I saw that picture and thought, gotta get it, so i did.:) I thought it was a bit expensive though, £22, considering the last one i got was quite a bit less. I was just wondering, how much is the average new kit going for across the world (or even this coutry-england-to see if i'm being ripped off by my model shop guy)

It pays to have a good elationship with the guys at the model shop - I get a 20% discount on any kit :D

And I think that this Opel should be ather expensive - with openning doos and stuff. MAybe you paid *a bit* too much. Look around and see what the kit goes for online.

The kit has not been released in NZ yet but the model store here says about $65-70NZD.
I got this kit sent from www.hlj.com for $55NZD

Small update.

Paint is being painted inbetween posting here. The body is awesome, it took me ages to find any molding lines to sand out.
Body has been painted in white and will be left for a week to harden before masking and painting yellow.
All other parts are sprayed at the moment and drying.
Will start all the small brush work later on with the small parts.
Coming along nicely :) :)

UPDATE.

Kit is coming along really well. Have it all painted apart from the masking of the body to paint yellow.

Finished off all the small detail work with the brush over the last 3 days.
Got caught out with the doors today :( . The inside of the whole body and doors has to be painted black. I like to brush this as it gives it more of a "race car look" then spraying it. When i done the inside of the doors by the handles they have a hole molded under the handle that i never saw. After painting the black, some had started to run down the outside of the yellow door
Lucky for me i waited till it dried, picked it of the sanded it out :)

Next few days well be spent putting decals to the finished bits like tyres/dash/brakes etc. Then will start to assemble it :)
In a few days time will be the hard bit of masking the body up to paint the yellow. The masking will have to be perfect as you cant hide any bits with decals around the front air dam

Ah, that Tamiya tape will make short work of the masking! Just remember to go light on the first few coats and you will be fine!
I still haven't seen this kit in the shops, and as it doesn't go with much else I shall try to avoid it!!! Nice though! Should look good next to the Calibra!

UPDATE.

Started the slow process of masking the model up last night ready for the yellow to be sprayed. First off the car was given a very light sanding to remove any overspray on the roof etc.

Next off I used Tamiya masking to mask the line on the back panels. After what seemed like ages of getting right I was happy with the correct placement on the tape.

Next the front was masked. This was to be the tricky part as it had to be perfect (no bleeding aloud), plus the lines had to be correct around the front air dam. The whole front was masked. Then using a very sharp modeling knife I trimmed around the spoiler line and removed the off cuts…. looked just right.

Next all the tape was pressed down using a tooth pick to get into all the small lines etc and other bits pressed down firmly with a soft cloth.
I used 6mm tape to then overlay over the first (about 4 layers back).

Then I cut newspaper to fit over the remaining body and tacked it down with tape. Then I taped over all the rest of the body to stop any oversprays. It’s important to tape the inside as well if there’s grills etc, as the paint can bleed though.
Altogether it took me about 2hours to tape the whole body ready for painting.

The sray can was then put in hot water to heat the paint up so that it flows better from the can.

The first coat should be a very very light mist coat.. Spray the model about 30-35in away from the model. This first coat should only just cover the car. It looks like shit but the idea of the very first mist coat is to seal the masking tape edges (a heavy coat and it can bleed though).

Waited 20mins then do the same again…. Another very light mist coat. Another 3rd mist coat was sprayed 20 mins later.
After 3 coats you should just be able to see a little bit of white still showing.

Leave for another 20mins.

Then the car can be sprayed with the heavy final coats.
4 coats later, it was all finished…looked brilliant….nice deep gloss to the yellow.

Now the fun bit…….removing the masking.

This needs to be done within the first 20-30mins after spraying when the paint is still soft. Anylonger and the paint will dry to hard and can “tear” the masking line when taking it off.

I’m very pleased to say that after removing all the tape it was PERFECT !!!!

Pics to follow later on.

Bit of a long dribble…..but I thought I’d say how its done for those who wonder about it.

The kit will be left for about 2 weeks to harden the paint up. Then the small ridge of paint will be sanded out then the whole car polished

I'm not entirely sure if that is wise! It can raise the pressure in the can to exploding point! :newburn: Keeping it at room temperature should be fine. It's a lot safer.

well on the can it says do not exceed temperatures above 50 degrees celsius. My hot tap is hotter than that. On one can i have it specifies 'do not place in hot water'. I dont know, maybe I have an unusually hot hot tap, but you won't catch me doing it.

I heat up my paint cans too. But if it's too hot to put my finger in I don't put in the spray can.

Ditto....the water only needs to be warm enough so you can just hold your hand under it. Leave for 3-4 minutes in water before painting.

Looks cool. I'm doing the same kit and was just wondering, when you did the headlights, did you use the supplied metal transfers, or did you just paint it. And did you stick them on using their own adhesive, or did you put them on so that the shiny side was facing outwards [ie. upside - down]?

Also dont you think that using metal transfers for mirrors is the way forward. They look so much better than painted ones. :D

I tryed using the transfers but IMO they gave the lights a funny look. So i just painted them black and left the small round bit clear.
I searched all over the net to get good pics of the lights as they are different to what is shown in the box pics.

Heres a few of the decals i've got on in the last few days. Just got one more side to go. The black arrows are the worse to get on so far. Take a bit of getting right.
They were coated in Micro Set then brushed down as best as possible. Then i had to use a hair dryer to warm the decal to get them to sit down correctly over the rear wheel arch.
Other's are pretty much straight forward.

NO, dont! Use the white primer! I've the grey primer and white paint, the white just never covers the grey fully.

Ok, I just bought this model and well I want it to look like everyone elses (im not a newbie but pretty damm close) Only part im a little gray on is the priming, could the person that did this model or anyone else for that matter explain how you do the priming on model cars, or point me to a webpage dedicated to model cars with some tips/tricks. Also what method/products do you use to obtain your polish? if you dont mind kind of a mini diary of how you painted the body would be helpfull. Seems like alot to ask, but if you have the time all help would be greatly appreciated.

-Mitch Welcome to AF!

Read this:
Painting model car bodies! Full instructions! (Yes, you have to use primer!) (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t14192.html)
It'll take you step-by-step, pretty much.

...And then look thru the FAQ (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t45619.html). There's a ton of info in there.

Then, ask any other questions you may have. :D
