Water leaking into hatch

Had this problem for a while. It's been a combination of different things that have been contributing factors. At first the main thing was the butyl seal on the taillights....I replaced it and it no longer leaks. My car is a SE, so therefore as you all well know has one those all great rear foam spoilers. And of course the mounts have rotted out of mine and leak. So I know that is one contributing factor here, but that is not the main contributing factor. Most of the water appears to be coming in from the hatch door seal right above the taillights where the seal meets the spot weld. What it boils down to is that I am trying to figure out what the main source is....the seal...or the spot weld. Another reason why I think that it is the seal is b/c the hatch will not open if you pull the release from inside the car....only if you prop the release handle up with something and lift the hatch up manually. So therefore it would seem that the seal has no stiffness left in it to give enough resistance to push the door open when you pull the release lever.
Let me know what you guys think of all this.
Thanks....
