I'm just wondering how much you guys tip your foodserver at a restaurant.
I usually work in the back putting orders together, but sometimes wait tables at my local Chili's. I am so sick of getting shitty tips for no reason! Many times the guests will compliment me on my great service and thank me for doing such a great job, then leave me a fucking $2 tip on a $30+ check. How the fuck can I pay bills with that shit?!
WTF?????
Then there are the complete ass holes who are just outright rude to me as soon as they sit down. It's not my fucking fault they had a bad day or whatever. Don't take that shit out on me, I didn't do anything! I'm trying to fucking feed you!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that....be polite to your servers, they are there to help you!
And for God's sake......FUCKING TIP THEM!!
If you can't afford to tip at least 15% (providing the server did a good job), don't go out to eat YOU CHEAP BASTARDS!
Ok, I'm done

People here don't even GIVE tips, why? Because it's your bosses job to pay your fucking wages, not ours. Why the hell should I do your bosses job?

Where the hell do you work? Here, the minimum wage here is $5.25 per hour I think. I tip well-beyond 15%, about 1/4-1/5 of the value of the meal. lol. Suffice to say, at least $10 bucks for $50 meal. Hell, my mother tips $5.00 to the cash register guy for take out (since he takes the order and hauls the food in for us). But of course, most of it depends on the pleasantry of waiter/waitress. Good behavior and service pays.

So go get a better paying job. I'm not trying to be mean, but being a waiter/waitress isn't the best way to go about making money and paying bills. A cashier at a convenience store makes better money than that.
As far as tipping goes, my theory is, the hotter the waitress, the more money i tip. If it's a guy, he better do one hell of a job to earn a good tip, otherwise he's getting the standard 15%.
For the last word on tips, just check out the opening scene in Reservoir Dogs, and listen to Mr. Pink. Wiser words have never been spoken.

But why should they be expected to care? People go to restraunts to eat, not give charity.
Get a better job, or better yet- dob in your boss, $2.13 has got to be in breach of local labour laws...

Karen, I understand your frustration. I used to be a waitress at a Denny's and it is frustrating when you try so hard to be nice to people and take care of them and try to make their meal pleasant and then they don't appreciate it in return. I don't know about other places, but here in Oregon we have to claim our guest check totals and then pay taxes on 15% of that, whether or not we actually received that amount in tips. Also, it's sometimes legal (I don't know the technicalities) for restaurants to pay their employees less than minimum wage with the assumption that they will receive tips to 'even it out'. Where I worked, we never got raises. The manager claimed that as we got better, then our tips would go up, so why should he pay us more too??
BTW....I don't mean to be a bitch here, and we don't have Well's here where I am and so I don't know what kind of place it is, but I do know that alot of older people who receive social security (or other fixed income) sometimes rely on their tips to make ends meet. So just because someone is an old lady doesn't necessarily mean that she doesn't care.
Personally, I start at 15%. And I go either up or down from there depending on how the service was. (And --when my kids were smaller--how much of a mess we made...lol) But I always leave more than 10%.
Tipping might seem like charity sometimes when you know that the server is also getting a wage, but it is a custom here and our laws and regulations (read: 'taxes') take that custom into account and assume that the server is bringing in that income. When they don't receive it for whatever reason, then it sometimes can hurt them financially.

I usually tip between 15-20% depending on how the service was, Restaurants pay waitresses low hourly wages because it is expected for customers to tip because of the service provided, You have a server who caters to your every need and pours your coffee etc.. and the customer never has to lift a finger, if you dont want to tip your server than you shouldn't go out for food and expect it hand delivered to your table. My first job was a at an italian restaurant, you wouldnt believe how rude people can be to the waitresses. :2cents:

Jimmy and Vikki here seem to understand the points I was trying to make. Mostly, just be nice to us!
And the answer to my "problems" is not to get another job....I know that most of you guys know I have a 4 month old baby. This job is the easiest way for me to work around Kevins work schedule so he can watch Nicholas when I'm gone. Kevin has a set schedule at his job, but I do not. Whenever I need money, I can go to work.

i just double the tax and then round up so thats around 15% I guess. What pisses me off is when waitresses act like they "deserve" to get a tip. I say you have to earn ur tip. Being hot and flirting helps, but at least show up with a smile and make sure our drinks are always full and that we don't have empty plates all over the place. Oh I have heard that they hate it when a waitress asks "Do you want any change back?" Like they are trying to put you on the spot for how much you should tip. This usually results in lower tips overall so thats just a suggestion.

EXACTLY!!
I know how to do a good job (i have been waiting tables for 4 years~)and I know when I have done a good job. I never ask if they need change back, I always say, "I''l be right back with your change", then if they don't need change, they have the opportunity to tell me so. And I aggree, there is nothing worse that a server who dosen't take away your empty plates....that annoys the shit out of me when I go out to eat.

well i manage a pizza resturant but sometimes i get called in to run deliveries if someone doesnt show or needs the day off. Anwys the one thing that pisses me off the most, is when you take a long ass delivery to someones house, everything is there, all the pops, your nice a curtious, the bill is like 25.00 they give you a 50.00 and say give me 24.00 dollars back. Its like man what a fucking cheap ass you are. And as odd as this sounds, ive found that the best tippers are usually the people who dont have the nice houses, the fast cars, and all the money in the world. The other day i took a delivery to a small house that didnt look like the person was the richest person in town, it was a 12.00 dollar order, the lady gave me a 20 and said keep it. So that was really cool. Later on that day, i take a 14 dollar order to a far ass house, i get their and its a nice big house, new corvette in the drive way, a few motorcycles in the garage, band new looking house, the guy gives me a 20 and says give me 5 back.
as foir tipping, i always give 15-30% depending on service, i know tips are their lively hood. But tipping is very important people, especially if you order from a place more than once. They remember who the tippers are and who arent. If your not a tipper, expect crappy service and food. I dont expect tips when im working inside, but i always remember the people who tip me, their food is always ready when they get their and always made right, and if it isnt i try my best to get it made right and fast. Also sometimes just being nice and talking to a server is a good idea. I have a few regular customers that come in and talk to me and bullshit for a few, and i treat them better than if they tipped me. Sometimes its nice to talk about something other than work when you are there, and the fact that a customer is willing to take the time to listen to you unwind for a few minutes makes a big deal, atleast to me it does.

when i go out ot eat i ususaly tip above 15% unless they were really really bad. the other night it was a 20$ meal and i left 5$ in tip for the person since she was very nice and fast. heck i even tipped the waitress when she dropped the milksake on me and my g/f (wasnt bad just my pants realy) but i didnt think she shouldnt get a tip. (it was also almost closing and she looked tierd). so generaly i tip well unless they piss me off. since i know around here in the states waitreses live on tips. they barly get paid otehr then that. and tipping really isnt opitnal it is the right thing to do.

like Korndogg said.....
sometimes it's ok to leave 2-3 dollars for a server at a buffet/diner type place because they don't really have to do the same amount of work as at a full out sit down type place.

Waitresses and the like (who get paid tips) dont have to be paid minimum wage... because they get paid tips.
BUT.
If tips and all doesnt match up to minimum wage, the guy who writes the checks is expected to make up for it.

when i comes to tips. it's a bonus. you shouldn't expect it. if you give me shitty service then you get nothing. you give great service then you get as much as half the bill (depending on how drunk i get) but damn less then 5 bucks an hour this day in age. sorry karen512 your working for slaves wages. but you can't expect people to pay your bills because your boss is a cheap bastard. do you get paid that when you work in the back not getting tips?

doh i didnt think of that. Damn that makes the math a lil harder then. But I'd say most people tip bartenders really well. Like I usually do %50. Dollar drinks I tip a dollar, 50 cent drinks I just give a dollar. You should become a bartender!

Yes, I get paid differently when I work in the back. I make $5.15 an hour plus each server has to tip me at least a dollar each hour I am there. It works out to about $20 an hour, which is really good.
And beleive me, I understand not to expect good tips for shitty service. But for a job well done, I do expect something.

wow that is a little different pay scale.
yeah for good sevice you deserve a tip if not a good tip. some people expect to much from servers. they want you to make them the center of your universe. just role with it if you can make a connection with these people strike up a little conversation then general loosin up and let a bit slide. this is pretty much in possible if the place is full and really busy. but in most cases the the effort is enough to make you stand out as a server.
by the way what type of restaurant is it? this makes a big difference in the tips you get.

I don't really think its fair to say that. One does not know how well the economy is doing where karen is working at and the circumstances leading her to work as a waitress.
S for me I usually pay more than the 15% regardless if the waitress is beautiful or not (I'm there to get served food, not go on a dating service)
the same goes for guys, my sister loves to go out to the bars and eating places and never tips them, until I found out about it and explained to her that they need those tips. Some people just don't realize that you should tip for service.

Like mediocrity said, boss has to make up the difference. Federal minimum wage states, employers must pay a cash wage of no less than $2.13/hour. If the cash wage and tips do not equal minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference.

Hey my wife works for tips in a big restraunt and ya sometimes tippers do suck. My daughter delivers to college kids and her response to poor tippers is I'm a poor college kid too. Don't order take out if you can't include the tip. It's better when they are drunk cause they cant count correctly. The poor ones always put the tab on their credit card. ??? My 2 cents is don't order out or go out if you can't tip accordingly MINIUM 15% better to do 20% it's really not much more out of your pocket but it adds up in her pocket. And yes they only get $2.65 a hour it's called food server wages.

For those of you that can't figure out tips.Example 20% $24 bill= take the 24 and times it by 2 so 24x2+48 $4.80 tip $ 65.00 bill would be $13 tip. hey in all the hubbub about the waitresses not getting tips, dont forget about your lowly busboy. i used to work at a local restaurant as a busboy, a restaurant that didnt tell the waitresses to give us tips, and i tell you, that sucked. there was only one waitress who would tip me every time, and you better bet her table got cleaned first. dont forget all you servers out there, if not for us, you dont get any tips at all, bc we dont have to clean your table, we can leave it for last and clean everyone elses tables. heck i used to be happy with a dollar, and there were only 3 busboys working with about 20 waitresses, so you get that its not that much money in the scheme of things

luckily here in NZ we don't tip.
If I was to give a tip it would be this. "I work hard for my money so for me to give it up it better be fucking first class service, and dont forget to smile"

I used to tip my busboys. And you know what?? They would have my table cleared first so I would get new customers first, so I would get more tips first. It more than paid off for me, and the busboys appreciated it too.:)

doh i didnt think of that. Damn that makes the math a lil harder then. But I'd say most people tip bartenders really well. Like I usually do %50. Dollar drinks I tip a dollar, 50 cent drinks I just give a dollar. You should become a bartender!
Where do you get 50 cent drinks??? I wanna go!! LOL

You dont have a George Webb's??? I thought they were everywhere? well anyway, its like a diner kind of thing so the food is real cheap anyway so 2 bucks pretty much covers it.
Edit: Didn't know you were in Canada. Thats why u dont have one.
I'm not in Canada. I'm in Oregon. Maybe there is a Webb's (oops, *blushes* I called it 'Wells' in my post...lol) ..maybe there is one in Portland, but there isn't one in my town.

Doubling tax may not always work unless you live in this area Long Island, New York where tax is 8.75% or 8.50% the other two counties that surround(Queens and Suffolk). To those in queens who may read yes queens IS part of the Island. But anyway tip your servers or delivery drivers. I tried to give more a friend a LARGE tip and she just got really mad and wouldn't talk to me the next 4 times I went to the place. So unless they are a friend and will get mad don't be stingy. Oh we don't have that "Wells" or "Webs" around here. Also EVERYTHING gets taxed here.
