lsd vs. stock tranny?

Im looking at some jdm H22a's on ebay and other web sites. Some offer for an extra fee lsd tranny. I know this is limited slip transmission, but can someone explain to me the difference of how this works between lsd and the stock tranny on my 93' Si or stock H22a1 tranny? Also, is ebay a good source of jdm's? Any bad experience with jdm's on ebay?

LSD = Limited Slip Differential

It basically does the opposite of what a stock, open differential does.

Your stock differential will transfer power to whichever wheel has the least resistance, and "spins more freely"; This causes loss of traction. Leading to bad launches, and bad handling charactaristics.

A Limited Slip Differential will take power away from the "spinning" wheel and transfer it to the wheel with traction, thus more efficiently putting your power to the pavement. Hence better launches, etc...

Ever wonder why when you burn out, theres only one tire mark? Its because of an open differential.

Hope this helps.

the 5th gen SH's have ATTS which is a very expensive and bastardized version of LSD... 5th gen base models have open ended differentials. http://www.quaifeamerica.com/differentials/diffs.htm

yea lSD is tight as hell . . my friends SE-R has it and he launches on me all day long . . its good cuz u dont chirp gears either . . i wish my tires spun at the same time :(

There is bit of misinformation going on here. To clear things up a bit, it is a common fallacy that Limited Slip Differentials transfer power to the nonslipping wheel. If this were true, then this particular LSD would be acting in accordance to a standard open differential, resulting in 1) incredibly poor traction and 2) unbalanced and unstraight launching. LSDs transfer power to the slipping wheel(s), stabilizing the car while it is losing control and ensuring that all wheels are spinning in uniform.

Quaife is the best LSD you can get right now, for several reasons. The main one being that it is backed by a lifetime warranty, meaning that if you blow it you can send it back and Quaife will send you a new one. Few people need to send it back. Kaaz also makes an LSD, and there is the 'okay' JDM OEM LSD.

ATTS is not an LSD, although it is a type of differential. ATTS sends about 80% torque to the outside wheel during heavy cornering to balance out the traction of the inner wheel. In straightline acceleration, ATTS does not even out power between the wheels, whereas LSD splits the power evenly during both acceleration and cornering. So, in theory, a good LSD is superior to ATTS.

like i said - ATTS is crap - that's one of the reasons i ditched it when i swapped.
