90Wrangler w/ hi oil pressure & aftermarket AC

It has a little over 62,000 orig miles & has had high oil pressure for over 8 years. It's not the sending unit (my 1st thought) or the (is it?) CV valve. The shop I go to has flushed it several times, thinking it might be a twisted bearing. The pressure goes back to normal at idle after the engine heats us, but acceleration/ driving is still pretty much pegged.
About the only visible "side effect" is that I've had to replace the valve cover gasket about every year to 18 mos. It's drivin me NUTS.
My question (besides does Anyone here have any other ideas- a quirk or something, about what could be causing this?) is that I'd like to add AC to it (4 cylinder, but amazingly strong. I had Toyota 4WDs before this & the Jeep is no comparison). Would that be a bad idea?
Thanks,
Kari

The first thing to do when there is a question about oil pressure is to check it with a master gauge - a mechanical gauge not an electric gauge with a sensor like the factory one.
In your case the sensor may well be the cause. the dash unit shows increased pressure as the resistance in the sending unit goes down so there may be a short in the sender or something in the circuit that is throwing the reading off.
The valve cover gasket failures should have no connection to the oil pressure because the oil that leaks out there is free flow oil that is supposed to drain back to the oil pan. If by CV valve, you mean the crankcase ventilation valve then that could contribute to the valve cover gasket leak but more likely there would be oil showing up in the air cleaner housing from that.
Have to go now but will answer more later. if you have more infor or questions - post them

Thanx for your reply, JD. The first thing that happened was to hook it up to an exterior gauge. :-/ It was true. I don't know if they checked the electrical or not. I don't think they had it long enough to.
Re cv valve. The valve that was looked at was for the pressure, not the gasket. At the time, the gasket had just been replaced.
The general consensus (gad, I ask EVERYBODY who MIGHT know) seems to be that it's been this long, don't worry about it. (not easy when you're heading off for a remote beach by yourself. but hey, too far to walk) I find myself not looking at the gauge (lol it's like seeing blood) & I do NOT wanna get into that habit!
No one else has ever heard of a Wrangler with a high pressure prob. Low, yes.
I know you had to go, (but when you get back) what ABOUT the ac thing? Is it a bad idea? Thanx again.
Peace,
K

So- the It has been checked with a mechanical gauge.
What was the pressure HOT?? COLD???
You are right. Better high pressure than low. Could be something with the pressure regulating valve on the outlet of the pump.
What viscosity oil are you using in the engine? 5w30, 10w30, or what?
The only hazard with high oil pressure is the oil filter. At about 200 psi they tend to expand and sometimes rupture but I don't think yours is to worry about.
What you could have done is install an underdash mechanical gauge that will tell you exact numbers any time you CARE to look at it. (that way no blood)
As to the AC - lots of 4cyl vehicles have air conditioning and there is nothing that money won't get you installed. There are probably used units from the auto recyclers that can be obtained and also aftermarket units are available from Hot Rod suppliers that will fit and be sized for the cab.
The Hot Rod ones will have the ducts under the dash and the recyclers will fit in the factory locations.
Hope this helps

Not sur if hot or cold. Castrol 10w30. Mopar filter
I'd hear it if the filter blew up, RIGHT?
Thanks VERY MUCH for the reassurance & the gauge idea,JD!! & re the ac

If the filter blew up, you would see the gauge drop off real fast as the oil came out the past the gasket.
Not a common occurance. The regulator valve has to stick closed for it to happen & thats not likely if the oil is changed regular.
Not to worry about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure took a long time to get back. Thanks so much for your help, JD. I guess I'll keep living with it/ get another gauge & TRY not to worry about it.

Kari
