I have a noise coming from the engine on my 1997 V6 sohc Ford Explorer & believe it to be from the timing chain as the noise is consistent with the sound youŽd expect with this particular problem. Question is would this fault also be indicated by the engine management system light (check engine light ) & does anyone know the diagnostic code that should be showing to indicate this problem ?

timing chains are very common noises in the SOHC motors - normaly the noise is on startup after cold soak and at high rpm - if let go long enough it can be a constant noise (this is normaly when the adjuster has totaly eaten itself) - most of the time there are no codes but if the adjuster has totaly gone I have seen missfire codes, cam sensro sync codes and fuel trim codes as a result - if you email me with you 17digit vin and mileage I can tell you if you have a recall on your timing chain tensioner from ford

Ford extended the warranty on fords to 7 years and 100,000 miles for this problem. Unfortunatly it only covers the front timing chain (yup there are 2 one in the front and one in the rear of the motor between the trans and motor) Same problem, same parts but no warranty from ford on this. Corporate told me to buy a mitsubishi when I asked them why. Hopefully yours is just the front one.
