i wanted to advance my timing to at least 15 degrees. but when i tried to, the only thing i got done was losing one of the screws for my distributor cap in my engine bay. i dont know much about this subject so any help would be thankful

did you search SE-R.net before actually doing it? id suggest researching something before you actually do it, and it might be costly if you dont

se-r.net didn't help much?? never heard that before. they have a whole write-up on how to advance your timing. maybe you should check again.

Funny I found it in 30 seconds. Even has the procedure and everything.
About timing on the SR20DE (http://www.se-r.net/engine/about_timing.html)
What more do you want?

Hmmmm, last time i check my service manual it said that base timing was 15 degrees +/- 2 degrees, Perhaps i am wrong but i don't think 15 degrees would be considered advanced.

Well maybe not advanced from the stock position. :D But the stock position is 15 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) so theoretically it is 'advanced' already. :p

15 degrees is the manufacture setting, 17 degrees is considered advanced and I believe it's the stock limit. No higher than 15 degrees if you have the JWT S3 cam.

i wouldnt recommend messed with your timing unless you know pretty much what your doing or have a friend that knows how to do it, cause you might lead your car to detonation... and that would be bad

The Service Manual might say that, but it has been found that most SR20DE's, atleast the earlier models, were ususally set around 12-13 from the manufacturer. Guess that is where the +/- 2 degrees comes in.
Not many have been found to be set at 15-17 degrees from the manufacturer. So it should probably say 15 degrees with an error of -2 degrees.

I don't know whether you mean 17 degrees is the sotck limit before detonation or if thats the highest you can take it safely, but JustinP10 has his running at 19 degrees with no detonantion and as a daily driver, Myself i have it at 17 degrees and it works fine.

Like said by everybody else don't attempt timing without knowing what you are doing make sure you have someone around that knows which plug wire to hook the gun up to and what the crank pully reading (as far as timing). Once you see how its done it pretty much cake after that though, Good luck:flash:

Yeah, mine's NA. I have been running 19 for a while, almost a year now. I havn't had any signs of detonation, however I don't get on it at all in the summer time when it's over 100 outside... the car runs poor when it's that hot out anyway. On the dyno 19 degrees picked me up a few horspower over where i was previously at (15-16 degrees). Actually, i think it was 6 peak hp, not bad for a 3-4 degree change in timing. Also, i always run 91-92 octane gas. It was 92 until they changed everywhere in Az to 91 :( It may vary on different motor too, 19 may not be the best for everyone, It sorta depends on what mods you are running.

I have my timing advanced to 19. When I first checked it, it was set to 13! I haven't dynoed since then, but it made a very noticeable difference. I always fill up with 93 oct.
