Extremely annoying noise

Hey Everyone,
I have a '98 Chevy S-10 that just started making a noise that I cannot pin down. It is a medium pitched sound that starts a few seconds after I start the engine. I can hear the noise increase in pitch when I rev up the engine, but disappears when I get to a high RMP. Any ideas would help. I'm thinking it is the alternator, but I don't want to change it out unless I have to. I have 152,000 miles, and it is the 2.2L engine, automatic (put a new tranny in it at 109000).
Thanks in advance,
Tim

disconnect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. Then plug the hose off and retest.
Bam, the noise should be gone, and if it is,
replace the fuel pressire regulator
