Stalling Problems

98 Ford Taurus 3.0 24v DOHC 129,000mi

I got in my car the other day to head home from work, and after starting and letting the car idle for 20 seconds or so, it started idling at around 600 rpm. Just barely ready to kill. If I reved it up, it was responsive. However, when I went to put it in gear (Reverse or Drive) it killed. Fortunately if I keep one foot on the gas, and the other on the brake I could make it home by timing every red light!!! :c)

Once I got it home, and popped the hood, it's making a hissing noise somewhere around the MAF.

I'm guessing its a vacuum line issue, but I was in such a hurry I haven't had time to look at it further.

I also checked the transmission fluid and it seems to be high. Also, my service engine light came on. I brought it to a buddies place to hook up the computer and it shows a TCC error.

Would there be any corilation between a vacuum line and the Torque convertor??

Any ideas?

the TCC code is normal on the taurus - they've had problems with the converters for a long time but it isn't vac. related since the converter is all electrical - but a vac line off will cause the problems your refering to with the idle

Thanks for the reply. Per the recommendations that I've seen on other threads I took the whole intake apart including the throttle body. I cleaned everything to rule our dirty components as the problem. When I got it back together, and started it up, my cleaning didn't help any. Same problem. However, the hissing noise almost seems like its coming from the EGR valve. I've checked all the vacuum lines, and I can't see anything that's disconnected. The next thing I'm goign to try is to start my car without the EGR valve, and see if the hissing noise goes away. If it does, then I guess I found the answer to my problem. If not, then I'll be looking for additional help from the forum.

Thanks again for your response!
