About two months ago I asked about changing the front shocks on my 97' Tacoma. Thanks for all that answered with info.
I'm finally getting around to doing this. I was going to use the j-hook type spring compressors while still on the truck, and then just pull the top damper rod nut, and bottome bolt, then pull the shocks out. A mechanic advised against this and suggested I pull the whole spring/shock assebly out of the truck, then try to find one of the heavy duty cradle type spring compressors like the shops use to do the shock swap out. He said the j-hook type can be difficult and dangerous.
Is this necsessary, or will the j-hook type work fine?

i would pull the strut all of the way out just take off the 3 nuts on top and the bottom bolt on the lower control arm, then use the spring compressor
